In essence, Marvel Rivals functions as a distant-combat focused shooting game, where weapons like guns, lasers, or magical spells are employed to create strategic battles.
In other words, it’s worth noting that Marvel boasts a wide array of both heroes and villains, some of whom don’t require complex strategies to complete their tasks. At times, all that’s needed is raw power – whether it’s a powerful fist or a massive weapon – and the strength to wield it forcefully.
In order to maintain a fair gameplay experience, Marvel Rivals does not feature any characters specializing only in melee combat. However, there are several characters with a strong emphasis on close-combat, and perhaps more than one might initially anticipate.
Kindly be aware that this text originates from Marvel Rivals Season 0 and might undergo modifications as a result of subsequent updates.
10. Thor
Carries A Brick Of Solid Steel
Thor, known as the Norse deity of thunder, often gets associated with his powerful lightning bolts and other such elements. Yet, it’s often overlooked that Thor carries a sturdy piece of magical metal on a staff at all times.
In the game Marvel Rivals, the majority of Thor’s powers are connected to his Thorforce, which he uses for both constructing and destroying it to fuel his lightning strikes. Remarkably, even when his power is depleted, he can still deliver a powerful blow using his hammer.
Moreover, not just for traveling, the Storm Surge ability can function effectively as a powerful charge, pushing back any adversary it collides with.
9. Groot
He Punches You, His Walls Punch You
Groot’s main attack, Vine Strike, extends quite far, making it more of a ranged move than a close combat technique. However, it’s not his only skill set.
In other words, when Groot engages in battle and fights nearby enemies, his defensive barrier called Thornslash Wall gets activated. Once active, this barrier lashes out, releasing vines on its own. Essentially, it functions similarly to a long-range physical attack.
If you find it a bit excessive for your liking, Groot also has an aptitude called Furious Flora, which is essentially a simple, three-hitting melee sequence.
Apart from causing harm, this combination additionally features a launcher, making it an effective setup for other team members as well.
8. Hulk
Chargin’ ‘Round With The Power Of A Bull
In his Marvel Rivals version, the Hulk exhibits a broader range of long-distance capabilities than one might anticipate from the typical, friendly green titan.
In his various transformations, he carries a Gamma Gun and grenades when in his Banner form, and possesses Radioactive Lockdown and Gamma Burst in his full Hulk forms. These capabilities serve supportive roles, primarily reinforcing his primary function as an indomitable wall of radioactive tissue.
In intense situations, Hulk’s main punches serve to repel enemies, and his extraordinary leap skill enables him to land devastating blows from overhead.
Let’s not delve into the details of his World Breaker ultimate; it grabs and smashes an enemy close by instead.
7. Spider-Man
Hits Fast, If Not Hard
Regardless of his spider-like power level compared to other Marvel characters, it’s no secret that Spidey isn’t the strongest among them. However, what he may not have in sheer brute force, he more than compensates with his swiftness and nimbleness.
In a battle, Spider-Man aims to ensnare his adversary within his own pace, continuously landing swift, repetitive strikes using both his basic attacks and special powers. With some skill, he becomes an overwhelming natural force when well-practiced.
With a well-timed move, you can swiftly dash towards your adversary using the “Get Over Here” trick, follow up with the “Amazing Combo,” and finally seal the deal with a couple of swift strikes using Spider-Power.
If you can label them in advance using a Spider-Tracer from a Web-Cluster for increased harm, that would be even more effective.
6. Captain America
“Charging Star!”
Whenever Captain America hurls his powerful shield, anyone opting to stand against it must concede. But in the game of Marvel Rivals, he only unleashes his shield once he’s had a chance for some close interaction first.
Captain’s main move, Sentinel Strike, consists of multiple hits in a melee sequence. Following the second strike, his shield starts bouncing off opponents, but he doesn’t need to stop swinging for this effect to occur.
Additionally, he’s equipped with his powerful Liberty Rush charge and a high-impact Super Soldier Slam that sends surrounding opponents flying.
In simpler terms, he can hurl his vibranium-powered shield independently, but once it’s cooling off, he resorts to close quarters fighting using only hand-to-hand techniques.
5. Black Panther
Claws, Kicks, And Spears, Oh My!
It’s not surprising that the fighting style of Black Panther, who seems to have the power of a panther deity, emphasizes swiftness and fierce close-combat.
His claws made of Vibranium and his swift spiral kick strike swiftly and powerfully, leaving behind a Vibranium imprint on impact as a mark for hitting targets precisely.
The primary long-range skill of the Black Panther character is called Spear Toss. This move leaves a Vibranium Mark on any target it strikes. These marks serve as preparations for his powerful close-combat ability, Spirit Rend.
If Spirit Rend strikes enemies that have been marked, it immediately recharges, enabling you to continuously link a series of powerful attacks.
4. Venom
Good Ol’ Tendrils
Instead of using his fists as his main method of attack, Venom primarily lashes out with the tentacles emerging from his body. While some might argue if this qualifies as a “melee” attack, its relatively short reach makes us consider it as such.
It’s just as well, since Venom does his best work up close and personal anyway.
Venom’s role is to act as a pesky, agile annoyance, swooping down on foes using the ability Frenzied Arrival, while also weakening enemies with the effect of Cellular Corrosion.
Regardless of whether they retaliate, he could prolong his lifespan using the health advantage of Symbiotic Resilience, and finish off remaining opponents with a couple more whips of his tendrils.
3. Magik
Speak Softly And Carry A Big Sword
A person who wields a significantly sized sword will primarily build their combat strategy around it, given its size.
Instead of Magik’s projectile, Magik Slash, and assistance from her Limbo demons, it will primarily be her sword that takes on the major tasks in this situation.
In addition to her main attack, Magik has another technique called Umbral Incursion which pushes enemies away from her. Her Stepping Disc ability enables her to jump a short distance and quickly engage in melee combat. Moreover, this ability can be instantly followed by Eldritch Whirl, a move she uses to disperse enemies when she arrives at a new location.
Even when transforming with Darkchild, Magik is still a melee combatant first and foremost.
2. Iron Fist
He’s Got “Fist” In His Name
It’s hardly unexpected that the individual known as “Iron Fist” will excel in close-quarter combat rather than other areas. This character is known for his assertive, headstrong fighting style, seamlessly transitioning between his main Jeet Kune Do attacks and his backup Dragon’s Defense moves.
Activating Dragon’s Defense triggers a unique effect. Not only does it lower all received damage, but it also causes him to switch to the swift punching technique of Yat Jee Chung Kuen as his primary attack method.
The only attack method that Iron Fist possesses that somewhat resembles a ranged one is the K’un-Lun Kick, which is essentially a powerful, high-flying kick from a distance.
Beyond those skills, Harmony Recovery and Crane Leap, I primarily use them for maneuverability and healing. Essentially, it’s about getting around swiftly and taking down whatever comes my way.
1. Wolverine
The Best At What He Does
Without a doubt, among Marvel’s numerous hand-to-hand fighters, it’s hard to overlook the iconic figure of Wolverine, equipped with his indestructible adamantium claws.
Since my X-Men: Children of the Atom days, I’ve been known for my quick, aggressive playstyle – a legacy that Marvel Rivals continues to uphold in my gaming journey.
His default attack is Savage Claw, a quick succession of melee strikes, and upon performing a Feral Leap, it transforms into the enhanced form called Berserk Claw Strike.
In simpler terms, during a lapse when he can’t use Feral Leap yet, his attack, Vicious Rampage, consists of a quick dash followed by a strong, solitary claw swipe – a move ideal for narrowing the gap while waiting for Feral Leap to recharge.
Naturally, all of this is upgraded when Wolverine unleashes his Berserker Rage.
