As a seasoned gamer who’s been around the block more times than I care to count, let me share some of my hard-earned wisdom for those eager Marvel Rivals players out there.
Introducing a fresh take on the Hero-Shooter genre, the new game Marvel Rivals, is now available. Instead of transitioning from Concord, the gaming community has enthusiastically moved over from Overwatch to experience this thrilling new offering. With Marvel’s vast and lore-rich universe, players can select characters like Groot, Venom, Iron Man, and even Jeff The Land Shark.
The third-person view might not be everyone’s favorite, but once you get used to it, this one is an absolute blast. That said, if you go in blind, you might be put off early, which would be a real shame.
To ensure you start off strong, let’s review fourteen useful tips for beginners that can give you a competitive advantage, be it against casual players or those in ranked matches.
14. Monitor Your Cooldowns
Here We Go Again
In many hero shooter and Moba games, characters have abilities that can’t be employed repeatedly immediately, instead they require a recharge period known as a “cooldown” before they can be utilized again.
As a passionate gamer, effectively handling cooldowns is crucial for me. It allows me to seamlessly switch between different attack sequences, ensuring I can continually barrage my enemies with an unrelenting assault, as one ability recharges while another is being used.
Managing cooldowns is crucial because very few heroes have powerful basic attacks, whether you’re focusing on healing your tanks or protecting your strategists.
13. Don’t Rush B
Please Don’t
It’s understood that everyone has someone they admire greatly. Yet, leading an entire team solely with one hero is quite challenging and demands a high level of skill, a trait that improves with experience.
Despite this, it’s crucial to proceed towards the opposing team thoughtfully. Hurrying headlong into them without caution could lead to your demise before you even get a chance to make an attack.
It’s wiser to steer clear from large groups of opponents, as engaging them without a powerful special ability usually isn’t beneficial.
12. Break Enemy Equipment
Focus On Them First
Multiple characters possess the ability to use destructible gear, such as Rocket Raccoon’s gadgets or Moon Knight’s Ankh, that enhances their abilities.
It would be advantageous to zero in on the enemy team’s gear to disrupt their power-ups. You’ll spot a reddish glow surrounding these equipment items, and after striking them, you’ll observe a health meter appear above them.
When they’re eliminated, you will be in a stronger position, allowing you to seize the opportunity and attack decisively.
11. Check For Season Bonuses
The Icing On The Cake
When you access the team-up screen for heroes, you’ll notice that Season bonuses have been added to your character roster. These bonuses are distinct from the team-up abilities, a topic we’ll delve into further in a later part of this guide.
Additional perks for heroes such as Venom, Groot, Scarlet Witch, and others during the season consist of boosted health, healing capabilities, and enhanced attack power.
While it isn’t compulsory to choose heroes with a seasonal advantage, doing so may provide you with a slight upper hand compared to others in the same hero class.
10. Do Your Dailies
Lucrative Rewards
I really enjoy the Marvel Rivals Battle Pass because it offers free perks, which we can earn by finishing both the seasonal tasks and daily challenges within the game.
To get everything you desire, simply finish diverse tasks to collect Chrono Tokens. In return, you’ll be able to purchase a range of currencies, emotes, skins, and sprays from the Battle Pass store.
So, go to the Battle Pass menu and focus on completing various challenges.
9. See How The Pros Do It
Exploring The Meta
Are you curious about which heroes top gamers often pick to play with? You can easily find out without leaving the game. Just access the Tournament section within the game, and take a look at the matches being played by the top players.
You’ll observe the team formations, strategies, and exclusive techniques that professional players employ to gain an advantage against their competitors.
If you have friends willing to join you, you can form your own group and take part in competitions, participating in tournaments together.
8. Try All The Heroes
My Favorite is Venom
To effectively select a hero to counter an opponent’s team, it’s essential that you have a fundamental knowledge of each hero available in the game.
Head over to the training ground, swiftly glance through each character’s skills for a brief overview, then experiment with them to find the ones that align with your gaming approach. Understanding their functions will assist in preventing unexpected run-ins.
Additionally, mastering the game’s various ultimates can significantly enhance your skill with your primary character, like Loki who requires a deep comprehension of all other ultimates to effectively use his own. Therefore, invest time in learning and understanding these abilities, and watch your overall gaming proficiency grow.
7. Fine Grain Customization
A Unique Feature
In the settings, you have the freedom to personalize the keybindings for each character. Certain configurations are tailored for Strategists, Duelists, and Vanguards, enhancing your gaming experience by making it more streamlined.
Instead, consider adjusting your game settings to activate Iron Fist’s melee range marker (a hero-specific feature), allowing you to make tactical choices more effectively during combat.
For optimal results, explore the unique adjustments available for each hero by checking out their personalized settings. This will help you surpass the standard user settings.
6. Don’t Be Afraid To Switch Characters
Just Do It
In the heat of battle within Marvel Rivals, I can swiftly switch my hero on-the-fly when things aren’t going my way against opponents. If I find myself at a disadvantage due to poor drafting by my enemies, it’s time for me to pick a new character and try to shift the momentum of the game.
If Iron Fist is targeting you, it’s not mandatory to keep playing Cloak & Dagger. Instead, opt for Jeff The Land Shark, utilizing his exceptional elusion abilities more effectively.
Instead of focusing on just one role, adapt to the situation by understanding the current game state and providing whatever your team requires. If no one else is taking up the Vanguard position, step up and lead the charge yourself.
5. Utilize Team-Up Abilities
Sweet Bonuses
I really enjoy the team-up capabilities in Marvel Rivals; they provide additional healing, increased health, and damage enhancement, none of which can be acquired otherwise. To take advantage of these benefits, simply pick a character whose team-up ability complements well with another hero effectively.
On the character display, you can clearly observe the team-up capabilities. Among my preferred duos, I particularly enjoy Adam Warlock and Mantis, who both excel as exceptional strategists within the game, capable of restoring an entire team’s health in mere moments.
While team-up abilities can offer an additional advantage, they are more of a nice extra rather than a crucial factor in the game. If you’re not familiar with a specific hero and pick them solely for their bonus ability, you might find yourself less efficient compared to when you play your main character. So, remember to consider this aspect carefully.
4. Master Your Ultimate
Very, Very Powerful
Each character in our game is one-of-a-kind, boasting a distinct set of talents. Every role – be it flanking, supporting, or taking on damage – relies on these unique abilities.
Among them, there are decisive moves that could swing the match towards your team. Many of these moves offer multiple kills and aid in achieving the game’s goal. You have the option to execute them alone or collaborate with a teammate.
Working together with your team members to synchronize the use of your ultimate abilities will prove incredibly beneficial, as coordinating against several ultimates can be quite challenging.
For example, you can use Iron Man’s ultimate with Groot’s to purge enemies in one go. Imagine vaporizing your enemies while they’re unable to do anything. Cool, right?
3. Use Destruction To Your Advantage
Break Stuff
Among the many things that make Marvel Rivals special for me, I adore the way the game’s environments can be destroyed. In fact, I recall finding great enjoyment with this feature when playing The Finals, another title that incorporated the same mechanism.
Hey there! Ever wondered why this game mechanic is something worth focusing on? Well, here’s the scoop: It enables you to surprise enemy strategists by moving stealthily undetected. Moreover, it offers opportunities to discover hidden paths leading to your objective. What’s even more fascinating is that you can interact with specific map elements and alter their orientation, creating new strategies on the fly!
In simpler terms, activate a power that reveals all objects in the vicinity that can be destroyed. Be sure to jot down their locations, and feel free to destroy them strategically to surprise your unaware adversaries and gain an edge in combat.
Press the B key on the keyboard to reveal the destructible structures.
2. Team Composition
It Matters A Lot
Currently, the game doesn’t feature specific role locks or queues. However, it’s generally not advisable to form a five-member Duelist team unless you’re exceptionally skilled. Even in such cases, I would suggest considering other strategies as well.
The typical team setup calls for two characters from each of the Strategist, Duelist, and Vanguard classes, this arrangement ensures a more balanced distribution of team responsibilities and reduces the strain on any one class.
In a four-player setup with one Duelist and one Strategist, it would be more beneficial to swap out the Duelist role for either another Strategist or a Vanguard.
At times, it might feel annoying, but I’ve found myself stepping into roles similar to Groot or Mantis, depending on the circumstances that arise.
1. Don’t Play With Randoms In Ranked
A Pinch Of Competitiveness
In just a few hours of play, you can easily access the Ranked mode as the game’s level progression is quite reasonable. However, keep in mind that Ranked matches are competitive and might lead to situations where extra time, or “Overtime,” is needed.
It’s crucial to have friends or fellow gamers who can work together with you, as this coordination can significantly enhance your gaming experience. If, like me, you’re playing solo, I recommend joining the Marvel Rivals Discord community and searching for groups seeking new players.
An alternative approach could be to invite some friends to join your game, and propose a team-up for Ranked mode. You may share your preferred character or role, engage in voice communication if you prefer (depending on comfort levels), and strive for victories together.
If you don’t have a mic, use in-game pings instead.
