Marvel Rivals Announces Plans for Monetization

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt and a closet full of skins that I’ll never wear due to their questionable aesthetics, the announcement of Marvel Rivals‘ monetization model has me intrigued. The developers’ commitment to no pay-to-win elements is music to my wallet’s ears. I mean, who needs an advantage when I can outplay you with my raw skills?

In just two days, Marvel Rivals, the free-to-play hero shooter developed by NetEase, is set to debut. Today, the developers unveiled their monetization strategy for this exciting game.

Initially, they emphasize that they will exclusively charge for cosmetics offering visual enhancements and upgrades, not for any features boosting stats or “pay-to-win” elements. Consequently, there will be no need to purchase new heroes as they are introduced into the game.

As a gamer in Marvel Rivals, I’ve got two types of in-game currencies: Lattice (the premium gold currency) and Units (the blue one). You can grab Lattice by forking out some cash directly, making it our premium currency. On the other hand, you can swap Lattice for Units at a 1:1 ratio. Plus, you can rack up Units for free through the Battle Pass, Achievements, and various Events. The usual price for a hundred Lattice is $0.99. For $99.99, you’ll score a whopping 11,680 Lattice!

In the game Marvel Rivals, cosmetics are the exclusive paid content you’ll find. The majority of these cosmetic items will be offered as bundles in the in-game shop. While each item within a bundle can be bought separately, purchasing the entire bundle grants you a discount. A standard bundle typically includes five items: a character costume, MVP animation, emote, spray, and nameplate.

There will be three levels of bundles, complete with their pricing structure:

  • Standard Epic-Quality Bundle: 1,600 Units (Standard value: 2,200 Units, -28% discount)
  • Standard Epic-Quality MCU Bundle: 1,800 Units (Standard value: 2,400 Units, -25% discount)
  • Standard Legendary-Quality Bundle: 2,400 Units (Standard value: 3,300 Units, -28% discount)

What to Expect in the Marvel Rivals Battle Pass

In the Marvel Rivals game, the Battle Pass offers cosmetic items similar to those found in item bundles. According to a recent developer blog post, these items are described as being “elegant and eye-catching.” Therefore, you can anticipate that they will be of slightly higher quality compared to the usual items.

Here’s what to expect from the Season 0 Battle Pass:

  • Luxury Battle Pass: 490 Lattices (contains items with a total value of 8,000 Units)
  • Five costumes and related cosmetics.
  • After purchase, you will redeem items by earning Chrono Tokens (Battle Pass tokens) through tasks and events.

For Season 0, the complimentary Battle Pass includes an exceptional costume and a set of additional items, all of epic quality.

As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that by investing in a Luxury Battle Pass now, you’re not just unlocking rewards for the current season, but also for those to come! Since Season 0 is shorter compared to what we have in store for future seasons, this exclusive pass is more affordable than it typically would be. This means you get a headstart and savings at the same time!

The creators of Marvel Rivals assure gamers that they can earn free cosmetic goodies, like costumes, by accomplishing achievements and participating in events. Additionally, players will receive complimentary Units which can be used to acquire additional premium cosmetic items.
