Marvel Rivals Bringing Back Controversial Overwatch Ultimate That's Been Missing for Years

Highlights

  • Adam Warlock has an ability in Marvel Rivals that resembles Mercy’s original Resurrection Ultimate in Overwatch.
  • It lets players resurrect multiple teammates at once.
  • Blizzard eventually changed Mercy’s Ult to Valkyrie and changed Resurrection to a regular ability with a long cooldown that can only be used on one teammate at a time.

As a long-time gamer and avid fan of both Marvel Comics and Overwatch, I’m truly excited about the upcoming release of Marvel Rivals and the addition of Adam Warlock to its roster. The recent reveal of his abilities, particularly his Resurrection power that brings multiple teammates back to life, has brought back fond memories of Mercy from Overwatch.

In a recent reveal, the new character Adam Warlock from Marvel Rivals exhibits a skill similar to Mercy’s original Resurrection ultimate in Overwatch. Marvel Rivals, an up-and-coming hero-shooter game, aspires to mirror the feel of Overwatch while offering a third-person perspective and an extensive roster featuring beloved Marvel Comics figures.

The lineup for Marvel Rivals has expanded significantly since its initial announcement. It now includes both widely recognized figures such as Spider-Man and Iron Man, and less well-known Marvel Comics characters like Luna Snow and Magik. Adam Warlock occupies a position between these two extremes in terms of popularity. He’s been an integral part of Marvel Comics for many years, but he’s relatively new to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having made his debut in 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the context of Marvel Rivals, Adam Warlock is categorized as a Strategist, which can be thought of as the game’s equivalent of Overwatch‘s Support class.

Recently, Marvel Rivals unveiled a trailer for the new character, Adam Warlock. Though a detailed explanation is yet to be provided, the preview suggests that Adam Warlock wields a staff capable of dishing out harm to adversaries in a manner reminiscent of Ramattra’s projectiles. Additionally, he can restore health with a beam evocative of Mercy’s healing power. Notably, Adam Warlock possesses an ability mimicking Mercy’s original Resurrection, which allows him to resurrect multiple teammates all at once.

Adam Warlock Has the OG Mercy Rez in Marvel Rivals

Mercy’s initial Resurrection ability in Overwatch caused much debate among the game’s community. Admirers, including dedicated Mercy players, appreciated its potential for impressive plays, while others believed it was overpowered and detrimental to the overall experience. Blizzard ultimately concurred with the latter perspective, transforming Mercy’s Resurrection into a regular ability with a considerable cooldown, only allowing for the revival of one teammate at a time. Since its removal from the core Overwatch gameplay in 2017, this contentious feature has resurfaced periodically in experimental modes. The announcement of its return in Marvel Rivals is bound to generate excitement – or controversy – within hero-shooter enthusiasts. Given the significant power of the ability in Overwatch, it will be intriguing to observe whether Marvel Rivals maintains it or if Adam Warlock undergoes a rework at a later stage.

Based on the experience with Overwatch, it’s likely that Marvel Rivals’ heroes may undergo adjustments in the future due to fan suggestions and balance considerations. However, major transformations to the game’s playable characters are unlikely before the official release. The closed beta of Marvel Rivals, scheduled from July 23 to August 5, will provide valuable insights into how the developers will use player feedback to shape the final version of the game.
