As a seasoned gamer with years of Marvel Universe adventures under my belt, I must say that the inclusion of Cloak and Dagger in Marvel Rivals has piqued my interest. Though they may not be household names like some other characters on the roster, their unique dynamic and compelling backstory make them an intriguing addition to the game.
As a gaming enthusiast who’s excited about Marvel Rivals, I can’t help but notice that they’re not just diving into the deep end with their extensive character pool from the Marvel Universe, but also introducing lesser-known gems like Cloak and Dagger. These two have been around since the 80s in the Marvel Comics world, yet they aren’t as widely recognized as some other characters in the Marvel Rivals roster.
As a dedicated Marvel fan, I’d like to highlight an intriguing aspect of the game Marvel Rivals: two characters, Cloak and Dagger, make up a single playable character. What sets them apart is their shared identity, a fascinating twist that stems from their rich backstory.
Who are Cloak and Dagger?
Originally, Cloak and Dagger were portrayed as teenage fugitives who cross paths in New York City. As runaways, Tyrone “Ty” Johnson and Tandy Bowen find common ground through their shared struggles and intense will to live. Tragically, these young individuals are exposed to a novel form of drug experimentation. Remarkably, they manage to pull through and develop supernatural abilities in the aftermath, transforming into Cloak and Dagger.
The combined abilities of Cloak and Dagger function optimally when these two characters team up. Referred to as “dual superpowers,” Dagger can generate light daggers and heal through her lightforce, while Cloak can teleport and pass through objects due to his darkforce. Moreover, Cloak and Dagger can absorb energy from emotions by touch. Emblematic of the contrast between good and evil, Dagger is energized by hope, whereas Cloak derives power from fear. Notably, while often working as a pair, Cloak and Dagger are connected to the X-Men.
This formidable pair resurfaced in public awareness with the Freeform television series “Cloak & Dagger.” This series belonged to Marvel’s TV lineup that preceded Disney+, including “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D”, “Agent Carter”, “Runaways”, and various Netflix shows related to “The Defenders”. Thus, technically, “Cloak & Dagger” is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although the characters haven’t been featured in any of its primary films so far. Despite the series being terminated after two seasons, the pair later made guest appearances on Hulu’s “Runaways”.
Marvel Rivals’ Newest Superduo
It’s quite fitting that the team of Cloak and Dagger is part of Marvel Rivals given their presence in the Marvel Comics universe. They were introduced along with Iron Fist, Black Widow, Squirrel Girl, and Wolverine in the official launch trailer for Marvel Rivals on December 1, which signaled their first appearance together.
In the comic book series Marvel Rivals, we see Dagger producing beams of light knives from her hands, while Cloak cloaks himself in darkness beside her. However, there’s no formal announcement regarding their specific abilities within the game. Given their unique skill set, it appears they could be developed as either Duelists or Strategists. Dagger’s capacity for teleportation and manipulation of shadows points towards a Strategist role, while Dagger’s use of light knives suggests a Duelist character. Since both roles seem to overlap in their abilities, it remains uncertain which role Cloak and Dagger will ultimately embody in Marvel Rivals.
Cloak and Dagger May Have Heavy Lore in Marvel Rivals
In the Marvel Rivals game, it might appear unusual to merge Cloak and Dagger into a single character; however, when you consider their backstory or lore, it becomes perfectly logical. Given that the game’s story revolves around the multiverse, it follows suit that the characters’ abilities would be reimagined in a way that reflects their combined strengths from working together.
In my excitement for the latest adaptation of Cloak and Dagger, I can’t help but wonder about the reasons behind their adult portrayal in this series. Unlike their teenage counterparts from their origin story and the live-action TV show, this version seems to be grown adults. Interestingly, Clok and Dagger have taken on adult roles in various adaptations throughout their history. Given the significant role that their age plays in their initial backstory, it’s intriguing to consider how Marvel Rivals might leverage the multiverse to offer a unique twist for this new version of the dynamic duo.
