As a longtime Marvel fan and avid gamer, I must say that my experience with Marvel Rivals has been a rollercoaster of emotions. On one hand, I’ve had a blast playing as some of my favorite characters, but on the other, there are certain heroes that leave much to be desired.
With the arrival of Marvel Rivals, many curious gamers find themselves pondering a common query: which heroes are effective?
It’s human nature to want to play the best heroes, so we have you covered. Based on our time with the review build this past week, here are the best and worst heroes you can play in Marvel Rivals
S Tier
The absolute best of the best
Hero | Role | Reasoning |
---|---|---|
Luna Snow | Strategist | The best healer in the game, Luna is an incredibly potent healer who’s quick, agile, and can turn the tides of battle in the blink of an eye. Her ability to heal allies while dealing decent damage to enemies, even at times providing crowd control, makes her a crucial member of any team line-up. |
Cloak & Dagger | Strategist | If Luna Snow is the best healer in the game, then Cloak & Dagger is a close second. Not only do they offer an insane amount of healing, but they have tons of versatility, too. Their ability to switch forms allows for strategic attacks; Dagger can cloak allies and blind enemies. Both can dish out plenty of damage, too, making them valuable resources on the battlefield. |
Hela | Duelist | Hela does an insane amount of damage, plus boasts impressive mobility and even a stun. She can turn the tide of battle quickly with precise shots. Your ult is equally devastating and can clean up enemies that are low on health. |
Venom | Vanguard | Marvel Rivals’ best Vanguard is one of the hardest characters to play. Those who put the time and patience into learning Venom will be handsomely rewarded. He never dies, traverses through the map in the blink of an eye, and packs a serious punch. The ultimate bullet sponge, Venom, is a very capable bruiser that can soak up enemy damage while dishing it out in return. |
A Tier
These heroes are still really, really good
Hero | Role | Reasoning |
---|---|---|
Spider-Man | Duelist | Here’s the deal about Spidey: he’s very good, but it’s even harder for him to play properly. There is no better assassin-style character in the game that can successfully pick people off one by one. Even if you’re caught and focused, you can sling out of harm’s away. Again, though, he’s incredibly hard to play. His difficulty keeps him out of S tier. |
Iron Fist | Duelist | Iron Fist is an assassin-style hero, but rather than utilizing stealth, Iron Fist can heal after eliminating enemies. Being able to properly attack the enemy back line, pick people off, heal up, and engage in devastating combos is key to performing well with Iron Fist. It’s far easier said than done, though. |
Wolverine | Duelist | If you’re a Wolverine with a pocket healer, throw him into S+ Tier; he’s that strong. Lots of damage and combos? Check. Survivability through health regeneration? Check. Damage reduction and select mobility? Check. He’s not OP, but he’s pretty darn strong. |
Hawkeye | Duelist | It makes so much thematic sense that Hawkeye excels at doing insane amounts of damage with precise shots. Is he easy to play? Absolutely not; you need to have pinpoint accuracy. You’ll be very rewarded for it, though. Hawkeye does a lot of damage, provided you can pull off the snipes. |
Black Widow | Duelist | Black Widow is an excellent sniper character that doesn’t require a high-skill ceiling (look at you, Hawkeye). As a result, she won’t do as much damage, but that’s a trade-off I’m happy to make. She’s still a top-tier pick if you’re looking for the back-of-the-line DPS. |
Thor | Vanguard | While not as tanky as Venom, Thor requires a much lower skill cap while dealing impressive damage. Thor’s an impressive Vanguard for sure, but his biggest problem, though, is that his survivability is nowhere near Venom’s. That slots him into A tier. |
Magneto | Vanguard | A methodical Vanguard that’s capable of absorbing damage and throwing it back at your enemies, Magneto is an excellent choice if you’re looking to play on the front line. He may not be as beefy as other Vanguards, but he’s not meant to be. Play smart, just like Magneto. |
Doctor Strange | Vanguard | Speaking of Vanguards that aren’t beefy, there’s Doctor Strange. His utility is off the chart, creating portals for fast travel, levitating in the air, and wielding a shield to deflect oncoming attacks. While he has a ranged auto attack, you want to charge Dark Magic and unleash them on nearby enemies. It’s a unique way to play the tank role that’s very rewarding. |
Mantis | Sentinel | One of the best heroes in the game during beta, Mantis has seen some nerfs, but she’s still a very strong support hero. In addition to her strong healing toolkit, she provides damage buffs to players, helping to turn the tide in crucial battles during a game. |
Squirrel Girl | Duelist | Looks can be deceiving here; Squirrel Girls’ acorns have more in common with grenades than, well, acorns. She plays a lot like a more nimble Junkrat, and her team-up ability with Spider-Man is an excellent form of crowd control that’s welcome in any team line-up. She’s noticeably weaker without Spider-Man. |
Moon Knight | Duelist | At first glance, Moon Knight feels like a jack of all trades and a master of none. With more time, you realize he can deal devastating amounts of damage in the blink of an eye. Combined with his surprisingly high mobility, he’s a great assassin-type character who can pick people off. |
Winter Soldier | Duelist | Despite only carrying three bullets in his pistol, Winter Soldier can dish out legitimate damage in the blink of an eye. His versatility allows him to thrive from range and in melee situations, meaning he often isn’t caught off guard. His ult is powerful but puts you directly into harm’s way, so be careful. |
Rocket | Sentinel | A valuable support that can dish out healing, damage, and buff your allies. Combined with insane maneuverability and a hitbox that drives your enemies crazy, and you have one powerful little racoon. Rocket’s outclassed by other healers, but he’s still an excellent option. |
The Punisher | Duelist | What’s now to love about The Punisher? He’s reminiscent of Overwatch’s Soldier 76 in terms of gameplay, with the added flexibility of a shotgun for close-range combat. He deals a ton of damage and, thanks to some mobility and a smoke bomb, escapes dangerous situations easily. The one drawback is Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Hela outclass him. |
B Tier
Good, Capable, But Not The Best
Hero | Role | Reasoning |
---|---|---|
Jeff the Land Shark | Sentinel | Jeff is just a worse version of Rocket: not as strong offensively, a supportive ult that’s more annoying than beneficial, and a much larger hitbox that’s susceptible to headshots. He’s not bad by any means, but there are better healer options out there. |
Captain America | Vanguard | Steve Rogers is a melee-focused hero who is surprisingly effective from a distance. Of course, that shouldn’t be a surprise for a superhero known for tossing around his shield. Captain America is a valiant choice as a Vanguard, but honestly, he feels like a weaker version of Thor. Every time I play him, I’m satisfied, but I wish I was playing Thor instead. |
Iron Man | Duelist | It feels weird to say that Iron Man isn’t agile…but Iron Man isn’t agile. Don’t get me wrong, he’s capable of doing impressive damage from high in the sky, yet I can’t help but feel like more often than not he’s a sitting duck that’s also outclassed by other heroes. |
Hulk | Vanguard | The most obvious knock on Hulk is that he isn’t Venom. While Bruce Banner’s alter ego is more than capable of initiating an attack, his damage profile is lacking compared to other tanky heroes. His survivability isn’t on par with the better tanks, too. If he has a dedicated healer, he’s perfect. Without one, though, he greatly suffers. |
Psylocke | Duelist | Her ultimate is extremely powerful, and she’s capable of stealthing into the melee, picking off enemies, and dashing out. She’s weak, but that’s expected as an assassin-style character. Skilled Psylocke players will wreak havoc on the battlefield. |
Adam Warlock | Sentinel | A support healer capable of dealing out damage, Adam Warlock has the added benefit of an ultimate that revives everyone nearby. It can certainly help turn the tide of battle, but despite his benefits and offensive prowess, I’d argue there are far better Sentinel options. |
Loki | Sentinel | The trickster god is all about deception, creating illusions of himself that all help heal allies and poke at the enemy. His ultimate is fun, allowing him to shapeshift to anyone on the battlefield, but it’s more gimmick than anything else here, unfortunately. |
Star-Lord | Duelist | While there’s a lot in common here with Tracer, Star-Lord feels a little underwhelming by comparison. Pair him with a dedicated healer, and we’re in business, but Star-Lord isn’t as quick as I’d prefer, and his AOE attack leaves him super vulnerable. |
C Tier
There To Make Up The Numbers
Hero | Role | Reasoning |
---|---|---|
Groot | Vanguard | It’s on par for Groot to be slow and lumbering, but this is taking it too far. He’s slow, shockingly fragile, and is only at his best when able to block off enemy advancement. Groot is only good in situational environments. Otherwise, there are far better options. |
Black Panther | Duelist | Black Panther is just a weaker version of Iron Fist. He’s fast, nimble, and agile but doesn’t pack the same punch. His damage needs some serious reworking to be taken seriously. |
Magik | Duelist | Magik isn’t as tough as the big, bruiser melee heroes, nowhere near as agile as some other assassin-type characters, and doesn’t have enough damage to make up for her shortcomings. Her toolkit is neat, but she’s incredibly underwhelming. |
Scarlet Witch | Duelist | The very definition of a glass cannon, Scarlet Witch is capable of dealing immense damage out of the blue but requires proper setup and placement. Sure, you can phase out of combat to avoid damage, but you also have to make sure you’re properly spending your Chaos Energy. Her ult is impressive…if you can get it off. |
Peni Parker | Vanguard | Peni has a lot going on in terms of micromanaging your Spider-Nests, but with enough practice, you can pick off the peskiest of enemies. The question, though, is whether it’s worth it. She goes down too easily compared to other Vanguards, so I’m going to say it’s not. |
Namor | Duelist | Namor has potential but ultimately comes off as more annoying than anything else. He can summon allies to do damage and easily maneuver in and out of combat. The one saving grace here is his devastating ultimate. Even still, you’re better off picking someone else. |
D Tier
In Need Of A Buff
Hero | Role | Reasoning |
---|---|---|
Storm | Duelist | She’s a support Duelist who provides less benefit than healers. Sure, she’s agile and able to play vertically, but Rocket and Luna are more agile, harder to hit, and (somehow) do more damage. The writing is on the wall if you’re doing less damage than a healer class. In my mind, Storm is the worst hero in Marvel Rivals. |
