Marvel Rivals’ Iron Fist Should Just Be the Tip of the Iceberg

Marvel Rivals’ Iron Fist Should Just Be the Tip of the Iceberg

As a long-time Marvel enthusiast who’s grown up with the Defenders since their comic book days, I can’t help but feel a rush of nostalgia seeing Iron Fist join the roster of Marvel Rivals. The addition of this martial arts master not only spices up the game but also hints at the potential arrival of more Defenders in the future.

Recently, Marvel Rivals introduced five fresh characters to their game lineup at launch. As the release date of December 6 draws near, players can soon witness these newcomers in action within the game’s meta. However, one of these additions, Iron Fist, might not just invigorate Marvel Rivals’ current character pool; instead, he could hint at the inclusion of multiple additional characters in this first-person shooter.

At the game’s launch, Iron Fist, Black Widow, Cloak and Dagger (combined into one character), Squirrel Girl, and Wolverine will join the roster. As of now, Marvel Rivals has not disclosed any details about the kits for these new characters.

Who is Iron Fist?

It appears that “Marvel Rivals” features characters from both the widely recognized and lesser-known aspects of Marvel Comics. Iron Fist, who also has his own live-action series, falls into the intermediate category in this spectrum. Although he may not enjoy the same level of recognition as Iron Man or the novelty of Luna Snow, Iron Fist remains a significant figure in the annals of Marvel Comics lore.

As Danny Rand, I embody the Iron Fist, a martial artist with an extraordinary ability to manipulate chi. In the captivating Netflix adaptation of Iron Fist, I can summon the Iron Fist’s power at my command. This character first appeared in the 70s, riding the wave of martial arts popularity sweeping across America. Although I’ve fought alongside the Thunderbolts and even the Avengers, I am most renowned for my work with the Defenders. My contributions to this superhero team paved the way for Netflix to launch a television series starring Iron Fist in 2017, further expanding their collection of shows centered around the Defenders.

In the grand unveiling of Marvel Rivals on December 1st, Iron Fist stepped onto the scene alongside Black Widow, Cloak and Dagger, Squirrel Girl, and Wolverine. On this very day, a special character introduction trailer for Iron Fist was also released, highlighting his powerful close-range martial arts moves, healing meditation techniques, and attacks augmented by a dragon’s energy both physically and projectile-wise. The character portrayed in the game is named Lin Lie, who wields powers granted by Shuo Lao the Undying, the formidable yellow dragon he summons. The trailer also confirms that this version of Iron Fist is an accomplished duelist.

Including Iron Fist in the initial lineup of Marvel Rivals suggests the possibility of introducing additional characters. Given that Marvel Rivals could benefit from having a few more Defenders, it’s plausible to expect some of them might join as well.

The Defenders Could Fight for Marvel Rivals’ Multiverse

Generally, fans consider Marvel’s Defenders to be a squad consisting of Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil. This is primarily due to the series of Netflix shows that introduced each character individually. Given that Iron Fist has a fixed position in Marvel Rivals, it seems logical for the other Defenders to be included as well.

In the game Marvel Rivals, there are three distinct roles: defenders like Luke Cage who protect teammates and fend off adversaries (Vanguards), attackers such as Daredevil and Jessica Jones who focus on defeating enemies (Duelists), and strategists like Iron Fist who offer buffs, debuffs, and diversions as needed. Therefore, it’s clear that Luke Cage is ideal for the Vanguard role, while Daredevil and Jessica Jones are perfect fits for the Duelist roles.

When Will the Defenders Join Marvel Rivals?

It’s challenging to predict exactly when each Defenders member might join the roster, but considering Marvel’s lineup of upcoming projects, it seems clear that we could be on the cusp of something significant. The upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again,” a follow-up to the Defenders projects previously produced by Netflix, is set to premiere on Disney+ in March 2025. This timely release presents an excellent chance for Daredevil to be incorporated into the Marvel Rivals, thereby also publicizing the new show simultaneously.

It remains to be seen when the other Defenders will join forces in Marvel Rivals, but for now, fans of the Defenders can play as Iron Fist within Marvel Rivals from December 6 onwards.
