Marvel Rivals’ Leaked Roster Has Two Major Question Marks

Marvel Rivals' Leaked Roster Has Two Major Question Marks

Highlights

  • Marvel Rivals impresses with positive first impressions and a growing fan base, hosting a Closed Beta in July.
  • The game’s roster includes classic Marvel heroes like Spider-Man and Iron Man, though two of its rumored potential additions are strange, with Squirrel Girl and especially Jeff the Land Shark being hard to imagine working in the game.
  • Jeff especially has no significant powers to speak of, so how exactly he will function is anyone’s guess.

As a fan of Marvel and hero shooters, I’m thrilled about the upcoming release of Marvel Rivals. The game has already made a strong first impression with its positive feedback during the Closed Beta testing and the growing fan base. With a roster that includes classic Marvel heroes like Spider-Man and Iron Man, as well as lesser-known fan favorites, it’s poised to appeal to both long-term and new Marvel fans.

In the realm of team-based hero shooter games, reminiscent of Overwatch, Marvel Rivals has generated tremendous initial excitement. By late July, a significant number of new, enthused players will have the opportunity to test the game during its Closed Beta phase. However, it’s important to note that despite this promising start, Marvel Rivals is still quite some distance from its official launch, with its final release slated for 2025.

In the span of a year, the lineup for Marvel Rivals could undergo significant transformations. With only 19 playable heroes in its Alpha phase, the addition of Venom and Adam Warlock brings the number to an anticipated 21. However, during this testing period, some tenacious fans managed to mine data from Marvel Rivals, revealing a rumored 16 additional characters supposedly under development. While some names on this list align with expectations, two seem somewhat unexpected at first glance.

Marvel Rivals’ Leaked Roster Has Two Odd Inclusions

Marvel Rivals’ Current Roster Makes Complete Sense

From a fan’s perspective, I must admit that the day-one lineup of Marvel Rivals is truly impressive. With a diverse roster of 21 characters, Marvel Rivers manages to bring together both iconic figures like Spider-Man and Iron Man, as well as intriguing underdogs such as Magik and Namor. This balanced selection caters to fans who have been following Marvel for years, as well as those just starting their journey into the Marvel universe.

In terms of gameplay, the confirmed lineup for “Marvel Rivals” is robust, offering a good representation of heroes distributed fairly among its three classes: Duelists (Damage), Vanguards, and Strategists. It’s important to mention that there are nearly twice as many Duelists compared to Vanguards and Strategists. Based on initial feedback from players, each character appears to be well-balanced with engaging abilities and attacks. Overall, the “Marvel Rivals” roster looks thoughtfully constructed.

Marvel Rivals’ Leaked Roster Includes Squirrel Girl and Jeff the Land Shark

In the list uncovered by Miller Ross, who is also responsible for many of the post-release character leaks in “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League,” there are numerous names that align with the base game’s tradition of being logical and recognizable to fans. Characters like Captain America, Thor, Blade, Wolverine, and Moon Knight are all well-known figures who would attract both experienced and new Marvel followers. However, there are two names that seem somewhat out of place: Squirrel Girl and Jeff the Land Shark.

Steve Ditko and Will Murray brought Squirrel Girl to life in Marvel Comics for the first time in 1991. Despite this long history, she remains an unfamiliar character to many Marvel fans. Over the past ten years or so, Squirrel Girl has garnered a devoted following due to her humorous exploits, offering a unique and lighthearted perspective within the Marvel Universe. More recently, Jeff the Land Shark entered the scene in 2018 as Gwenpool’s lovable sidekick. Similarly to Squirrel Girl, Jeff has gained a significant fanbase, making frequent appearances in various comics.

As an avid fan of Marvel Rivals, I can’t help but get excited about the prospect of adding cult characters like Squirrel Girl and Jeff the Land Shark to the game’s roster. However, this addition raises a crucial question: how will these unique characters fit into the game’s meta?
