Marvel Rivals Most Unique Feature Would Fit Perfectly Into Overwatch 2

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for superheroes, I’ve got to say that the upcoming hero shooter, Marvel Rivals, has caught my attention like none other in recent times. While it’s inevitable that games of its genre are compared, Marvel Rivals stands out with its unique features, particularly its team-up mechanic.

Just like many contemporary hero-based shooting games, Marvel Rivals has often been likened to Overwatch 2 over the past few months, as the similarities have only become more apparent during its beta phase. It’s true that some aspects of Marvel Rivals seem to draw heavily from Overwatch, with several abilities appearing to be directly inspired by Blizzard’s game, both in terms of mechanics and visual aesthetics.

Marvel Rivals offers a host of distinct advantages that set it apart. Although the Marvel brand is undeniably appealing, what truly makes it stand out are additional elements such as a third-person perspective and destructible environments. However, the game’s most defining feature is its team-up mechanic, which showcases its unique character. It would be great if Overwatch could adopt this team-up mechanic from Marvel Rivals at some point.

Overwatch 2 Needs to Borrow Marvel Rivals’ Team-Up Abilities

Why Marvel Rivals’ Team-Up Abilities Should Come To Overwatch

In the game of Marvel Rivals, players will spot a tiny icon at the screen’s base, displaying images of various characters. When several of these characters are chosen, they collectively activate one of Marvel Rivals’ team-up skills – an impressive boost or unique attack that all selected characters can utilize during the battle. As its final Beta phase concluded, Marvel Rivals had incorporated 10 distinct team-up abilities, many of which reflect classic character partnerships from Marvel comics.

As a devoted fan, I’ve got to say that one of the most thrilling team-up abilities I’ve encountered in Marvel Rivals is the Symbiote Bond. This special connection links Venom, Spider-Man, and the amazing Peni Parker. With this bond active, both Spidey and Peni can unleash a mesmerizing barrage of high-damage black Symbiote tentacles! It’s a sight to behold!

In the game Marvel Rivals, a standout cooperative ability is the Planet X Pals of Rocket Raccoon and Groot. This lets Rocket climb onto Groot’s shoulders, providing them both with a 50% reduction in damage received. These team-up features not only make Marvel Rivals distinctly appealing, but also offer a genuinely gratifying gaming experience.

While many team-ups in Marvel Rivals function effectively with minimal complexity, some demand strategic communication for optimal usage. These intricate moves can be immensely satisfying when executed successfully, and they can swiftly alter the course of a fight. Moreover, these team-up abilities motivate players to employ various characters from diverse classes, thereby favoring balanced squads. It’s worth noting that Overwatch 2 could learn from these aspects.

Overwatch 2 Already Has The Lore for Team-Up Abilities

It’s fortunate that incorporating Marvel Rivals’ team-up features into Overwatch 2 could be straightforward, especially from a storytelling perspective. Fans of Overwatch already have a rich grasp of character relationships due to cinematics, in-game dialogues, comics, and novels. Consequently, it’s the characters with strong lore connections who would likely produce the most effective team-up abilities.

The backstories of Hanzo, Genji, and Kiriko are interconnected, with Hanzo and Genji being siblings, and Kiriko having learned under their tutelage from their mother. Although they all share the same climbing ability as a passive trait, it could be engaging to see Overwatch 2 introduce a true team-up skill for the Shimada family, enabling them to summon a spirit fox or dragon temporarily during battle to aid them in combat. Similarly, Ana and Pharah, Torbjorn and Brigitte, Soldier 76 and Reaper, Tracer and Winston could also benefit from team-up abilities in the game.
