As a seasoned veteran of the hero shooter genre and a lifelong Marvel fan, I’ve got to say that Marvel Rivals is proving to be quite the exciting addition to my gaming rotation. The 6v6 format is a breath of fresh air, and despite the clamor for role queues, I find myself enjoying the flexibility of jumping into any position as needed.
Marvel Rivals is flourishing as a six versus six hero shooting game, and anyone who has experience or is well-versed in the genre may have strong views on its performance and design. Already, there are numerous players advocating for a role queue system, such as one where they can specifically choose their role, with counterarguments suggesting that those players just occasionally play as healers.
Similar to certain characters, they often receive negative perception because of the overwhelming power or difficulty in handling their ultimate skills, for instance, Jeff the Land Shark, Iron Fist, and Scarlet Witch.
One intriguing aspect of the game Marvel Rivals so far is the way each character’s difficulty level is rated. On the Characters menu, players can gauge a character’s potential difficulty by looking at the number of stars they have, ranging from one to five, with five being the hardest. This rating might be subjective based on individual playstyles, but it offers a unique and invigorating take on characters like Spider-Man. Spider-Man is undeniably one of Marvel’s most beloved characters, arguably the most popular, and making him one of the more challenging characters to play at launch is daring. However, this decision also sets a high and rewarding skill ceiling for players who choose Spider-Man.
With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility in Marvel Rivals
It’s plausible that certain players might grab Spider-Man and swiftly adapt to his special gameplay style and optimal strategies. However, it seems evident that he’s among the trickier characters to jump into a game without sufficient practice and familiarity with the map.
In essence, much of Spider-Man’s challenges can be attributed to his versatile movement abilities, especially when automatic swinging is turned off. This allows him to quickly outmaneuver an enemy from behind, ideally a Strategist. While disabling automatic swinging enhances intentional and accurate movement, it also equips Spider-Man with the ability to web-dash in the game Marvel Rivals.
This feature introduces an extra level of intricacy into the gameplay of Spider-Man, making it unlike other experiences players would have without it. It’s crucial for navigating a confusing barrage of bullets or closing in on an adversary quickly. The various maps alter how straightforward this maneuver might seem, but even so, it remains challenging to execute because mastering Spider-Man’s abilities and agility requires significant skill.
Spider-Man’s Popularity is Met with a Challenging Playstyle in Marvel Rivals
Spider-Man boasts some unique, non-traditional technology, like his “Come Here!” move which pulls an adversary towards him even when they’re near the map’s edge, causing them to fall and perish. This is just one aspect of his mobility; mastering how to navigate and handle different opponents requires a deep understanding. It’s quite challenging because Spider-Man isn’t primarily focused on projectiles, and he needs to use his abilities strategically with careful timing since they have lengthy cooldown periods.
Spider-Man’s signature moves involve first attacking an adversary using a Web-Cluster Spider-Tracer, then pulling himself towards the enemy with “Get Over Here!” and delivering an uppercut with the Amazing Combo. After that, he continues to attack them using his standard Spider-Power abilities.
In contrast, well-known characters like Venom, Iron Man, and Wolverine, rated one, two, and three stars respectively, are often argued to be more straightforward to excel with conventional tactics that can be mastered without extensive grinding. While other factors significantly impact a character’s success, such as whether a Strategist is always providing healing, it’s worth noting that the game Marvel Rivals is still in its early stages, and players are already learning how to use Spider-Man effectively. As the weeks turn into months, it will be fascinating to observe how proficiently players can maneuver maps with Spider-Man, let alone a year from now.
