As a gamer with a soft spot for Marvel and a history of being disappointed by live-service shooters, I find myself surprisingly captivated by Marvel Rivals. Despite my usual disdain for hero shooters, this game has managed to reel me in with its roster of iconic characters that I’ve grown up admiring.
Yesterday saw the launch of Marvel Rivals, and it swiftly soared through the rankings without a moment’s pause. On Steam, this game astonished everyone by amassing an impressive peak player count of 444,000 users in no time at all, making it one of the most thriving free-to-play games on the platform straight out of the gate.
The performance persisted all day long, and as we moved towards the weekend, participation, viewership on streams, and general enthusiasm about the game increased notably, with this trend continuing into the weekend.
Marvel Rivalling Blizzard
Marvel Rivals might be the strongest contender to challenge Overwatch so far – at least until Deadlock arrives on the scene.
In this game with a superhero theme reminiscent of Overwatch’s success, players can enjoy the traditional aspects of a hero shooter, but instead of a generic roster, they’ll find iconic Marvel characters such as Iron Man, The Punisher, Groot, and Storm to choose from. It offers a wide variety of characters for gamers to take control of.
I hate hero shooters, but I’m pleased to say that, being a Marvel fan, Rivals has me hooked.
2021 has been challenging for live-action shooter games, given the closure of Concord and the upcoming shutdown of XDefiant. It’s heartening to witness another game in the same genre stepping up confidently into the gaming world.
The reviews could use some improvement, however, the main criticism appears to focus on Marvel Rivals not being distinct enough from Overwatch. However, this is essentially what the game aims to be – an alternative and competitor. It would be challenging for it to replace Overwatch if it wasn’t similar in some aspects.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m super excited about Marvel Rivals, developed by NetEase. They’ve been teasing some groundbreaking features that will make this game truly unique. For instance, just recently, they emphasized that the season-based battle passes won’t be tied to specific timeframes. That means if you miss out on rewards during a season, you’ll still have the chance to unlock them even after the season has wrapped up!
