Marvel Snap Designer Talks Banned, Recommended High Voltage Cards

As a seasoned Marvel Snap gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say the High Voltage mode has me buzzing with excitement! The three-turn limit and variable energy scale add a thrilling twist to the game that’s sure to keep things interesting. I can already feel the adrenaline pumping as I strategize my moves within such a short time frame.

During the special event called “High Voltage mode,” which runs from October 16th to October 24th, the competitive card game Marvel Snap is getting a fresh new twist! In this limited time frame, players will need to secure victory within just three turns. An important rule change here is that you won’t be able to use the ‘Snap’ feature, which could previously double your points. Instead, each turn grants you two cards and between 2-5 energy units. Due to the unique nature of High Voltage mode, some cards may become ineligible for play, while others less frequently used might prove significantly more valuable than before.

As a gaming enthusiast, I recently had a chat with Ben Hayes, the design director behind Marvel Snap’s High Voltage mode. He’s brimming with excitement about this new feature! The team devised the three-turn limit and adjustable energy scale for High Voltage, making each game thrilling yet strategic. Moreover, Ben spilled the beans on which three character cards are off-limits in High Voltage battles, as well as those he suspects will be more effective during this limited-time mode, happening from October 16 to October 24.

Three Characters And Several Locations Are Banned In High Voltage Mode

Since High Voltage mode lasts for just three turns per round, any Location card that takes effect on Turn 4 or beyond won’t show up. Also, the Location Limbo, which extends the game to seven turns, is not an option. Hayes humorously remarked, “I don’t fancy a three-turn game turning into a seven-turn one,” finding the idea of such a long game amusing.

In the game, it is forbidden to use character cards such as Magik, Galactus, and Black Widow. Hayes considered the absence of Magik and Galactus to be self-explanatory, but the exclusion of Black Widow was less clear. However, Hayes later clarified that skipping a turn to draw cards proved to be quite harsh and disrupted players’ strategies significantly. The impact of these three prohibited cards is as follows:

  • Magik: Turns a Location into Limbo, which is already a prohibited Location in High Voltage.
  • Galactus: Can destroy Locations, which is extremely difficult for players to recover from with only three turns.
  • Black Widow: Gives opponents a Widow’s Bite, which prevents them from drawing cards.

One card that might unexpectedly not be prohibited is Agatha Harkness, who takes over the player’s moves on even turns. Hayes admits that Harkness will be notably unpredictable during High Voltage mode, suggesting that she will strive to utilize as much of the increased energy as possible from the players.

Some Cards May See More Frequent Use In High Voltage

On the contrary, Hayes believes that multiple cards will hold greater worth in High Voltage mode. He points out expensive cards such as Black Panther and Doctor Doom (whose Doom Bots can potentially snatch a win at the last moment) among others, as less risky to deploy with fewer turns and more energy available. Notably, Hayes anticipates that players will avoid using Hydra Bob, a card that shifts locations upon a Snap event, which won’t transpire in High Voltage matches, according to his statement.

Oh, wait, and you should definitely play Hydra Bob, because Hydra Bob has no downsides in this mode. I don’t think Hydra Bob is going to be in every deck, but it’s a very good card. It’s better than it is in normal
Snap.

Generally speaking, Hayes is predominantly thrilled about the inventive decks and combos players might create in High Voltage mode. He anticipates that this faster-played version of the game will inspire more cautious Marvel Snap deck builders to explore unconventional mixes they wouldn’t ordinarily attempt. Moreover, he can hardly wait to observe how Agony, a fresh card obtainable by participating in High Voltage matches, will influence the future Marvel Snap metagame.
