Marvel SNAP Mastery Guide

The long-awaited Character Mastery feature has been unveiled in Marvel SNAP, offering an array of fresh flares and finishes for players. Yet, not everyone is overjoyed about this update, as some feel it’s another step by the developers to encourage microtransactions – a practice that Marvel SNAP has previously come under fire for.

Before we delve into the debates surrounding Character Mastery and Mastery Caches, let’s first provide a comprehensive overview of what Character Mastery is within Marvel SNAP, how it operates, how to utilize it, and the benefits it provides. Here’s your essential guide to understanding Character Mastery in Marvel SNAP.

What Is Character Mastery in Marvel SNAP?

Character Advancement represents a fresh method for upgrading individual cards. By advancing along the Mastery meter, you can unlock unique effects, card finishes, and emojis in response. This system is tailored to each character, offering them their own 30-level progression bar that fills as you collect Mastery Experience points.

You might consider Character Mastery analogous to the Collection Level in Marvel SNAP. Enhancing your cards will now not only increase your overall Collection Level but also grant Experience Points specifically for the character you’re improving. Unlike the Collection Level, which affects gameplay by providing access to fresh cards and resources, Mastery is solely aesthetic, with no impact on game mechanics.

How to Access Character Mastery

  1. Go to your card collection.
  2. Select a card.
  3. Click “Mastery” at the top.

When you choose a card from your collection, you’ll notice its Character Mastery progress displayed in the upper-left corner. To get a comprehensive look at this card’s progress, simply press the “Mastery” button located at the top.

To easily spot characters who have advanced on the Character Mastery tracker and offer collectible prizes, sort your cards using the newly added “Mastery” tag. This will showcase all characters with rewards, indicated by a shining diamond symbol hovering over them.

If you flip the Mastery tag, you’ll discover cards that allow for customization with Mastery embellishments and final touches.

How Do You Earn Character Mastery XP?

In the Marvel SNAP game, you can accumulate Mastery Experience in two ways: by getting new versions of cards or by executing Infinity Splits. When you acquire a fresh version of a card, it rewards you with between 25 and 250 Mastery XP, depending on its rarity. Furthermore, for each time you perform a card split, you will receive 15 Mastery XP.

As a gamer, I’ve got to say, to fully deck out my character and grab all those sweet Mastery Caches, I’m looking at racking up a whopping 1,300 Mastery XP. To give you an idea, that’s like hitting the Infinity Split with the same card a stunning 87 times or snagging five of its ultimate variants. So buckle up, it’s gonna be quite the grind!

The table below shows the details of Mastery XP distribution.

Mastery XP Earned Per Action

Source XP
Splits 15
Rare Variants 25
Super Rare Variants 75
Spotlight Variants 125
Season Pass Variants 125
Bundle Variants 125
Album Variants 125
Conquest Variants 125
Event Variants 125
Ultimate Variants 250

How to Equip Mastery Flares and Finishes

  1. Select a card you’ve maxed out. (Maxing out a card means you’ve earned three total Infinity Splits on any three or one single Character, plus an additional Infinity Split on each new Character that you want to customize.)
  2. Tap “Custom Card.”
  3. Click the edit button next to “Make a Deck” (the pen icon).
  4. Choose a cosmetic item from the Mastery flares or finishes to equip on the card.
  5. Click “Save” to use this variant in decks.

Remember that you can’t use a combination of flares and finishes simultaneously. Instead, you can only have one active at any given time. Additionally, to use either a flare or a finish, you must first unlock the Costume Card feature, which becomes accessible after achieving Infinity Split with that specific card at least once.

What Are the Mastery Cache Rewards?

Gaining Character Mastery yields Mastery Crates, which are treasure chests filled with fresh flares and finishes. Mastery Crates are categorized into three degrees, where higher tiers offer rarer aesthetic items. Each tier consists of eight stages, with each stage offering a possibility to unlock cosmetic rewards.

Six stages on the Progress Bar for Mastery offer set prizes at levels 10, 15, 20, and 25.

Why Fans Aren’t Happy with SNAP’s Character Mastery

  • Fans were hoping the feature would allow mix-and-match card customization, but it doesn’t.
  • The new flare and finishes make it harder to target desired outcomes from Infinity Splits.
  • Some specific flares and finishes—like Banana—seem to appear more frequently than others.
  • The Mastery XP progression favors pay-to-play players, pushing the purchase of new variants, which doesn’t align with how F2P players engage with Marvel SNAP.

Fans of Marvel SNAP have expressed disappointment because Character Mastery doesn’t live up to the expectations set by its advertisements. Initially, players anticipated it as a means to personalize their cards by unlocking cosmetics to design exclusive versions. However, this turned out to be a misconception about its true nature.

The perks from Character Mastery are added to your potential Infinity Splits, which means they can pop up as random results during Splits. This unpredictability is causing frustration among fans because there’s no guaranteed method for obtaining a specific finish and fare combination. Every time you split a card, a fresh variant with your unlocked cosmetics is randomly created, making it almost impossible to achieve the perfect “God Split.
