Over the past several years, DC comics have earned a somewhat grim reputation among fans, largely due to the gritty tone set by Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and Zack Snyder’s intense, introspective films. However, contrary to this image, DC is home to a vibrant cast of colorful characters who embody the core values of truth, justice, and a brighter future. Despite this, the Injustice series by NetherRealm Studios doesn’t delve much into this side of the DC universe. As a devoted fan, I can attest that this side of DC is worth exploring!
In an alternate universe, Superman tragically ends Lois Lane’s life, loses control, and establishes his own tyrannical faction of super-powered leaders – this is the premise of the Injustice series, which delves into some grim themes. And if NetherRealm were to cross over to Marvel and develop a fighting game, it could be just as bleak, if not more so.
How a NetherRealm Marvel Game Could Be Even Darker Than Injustice
The Marvel Universe Has Plenty of Truly Evil Villains
It is commonly acknowledged that Batman’s rogues gallery encompasses some of the most wicked villains in comic book lore, with The Joker frequently considered an unforgivable fiend capable of committing heinous acts. However, it should be noted that the Marvel universe also houses a number of villains who could challenge even The Joker’s notoriety.
Red Skull, Hitler’s protege and Hydra’s leader, was followed by Baron Zemo who established the Masters of Evil, taking it upon himself to slay Captain America’s son. Ultron harbors a desire to eliminate all humans, while Doctor Doom ascended to divinity and swiped Reed Richards’ family. These are just a few examples of Marvel’s extensive collection of enduring villains.
Among the more contemporary yet vile adversaries in Marvel lore is The Maker, an alternate version of Reed Richards from the Ultimate Universe who fell into darkness and recently sought dominion over a new universe, where he aimed to eradicate superheroes entirely. NetherRealm Studios could select this villain among many others from Marvel’s roster, instantly creating an antagonist with a convincing evil edge that would effectively propel the game’s storyline forward.
A NetherRealm Marvel Game Could Let Its Heroes Loose
A NetherRealm game might not only highlight some of Marvel’s infamous villains but also allow certain Marvel heroes to display actions more intense than fans typically expect. Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe occasionally hints at a hero’s darker strategies, there are numerous comic book heroes whose fighting style can lead to an opponent being severely injured or even fatally wounded, as depicted by pools of their own blood on the ground.
In a potential NetherRealm Marvel game, characters like The Punisher, Wolverine, Daredevil, and even Spider-Man (when he’s not holding back) could showcase their capacity for intense fighting. This game might emphasize the grittier aspects of these universally admired superheroes. Although a NetherRealm game would need to keep things within bounds, as Injustice is rated T and Marvel might not approve of anything more explicit. However, such a game could still provide thrilling action and a storyline as dark as the one presented in the Injustice series.
