Summary
- Avengers: Secret Wars marks the end of the multiverse phase on 7 May 2027.

- Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne will be phased out, potentially impacting future Ant-Man movies.
The multiverse phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe might not have been the most popular in the MCU’s run, but Marvel Studios is set to release some huge projects in the near future. With Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and two Avengers films coming up, there is a lot of potential for this phase to be turned around with some iconic and memorable moments. However, this phase is expected to be drawing to an end after Avengers: Secret Wars.
The film “Avengers: Secret Wars” is set to premiere on May 7, 2027, marking the conclusion of this chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Hints have been dropped that the X-Men will make their MCU debut following this release, potentially signaling a fresh start centered around mutants. As an influx of new characters is anticipated in the coming days, there’s speculation that some existing ones may bid farewell.
As Alex Perez shared during the most recent Cosmic Circus Q&A, it appears Marvel Studios is preparing to bid farewell to Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne at the conclusion of their multiverse phase. This means we may no longer see Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer reprising their roles as these iconic characters from the Ant-Man franchise. The future of Ant-Man films may be uncertain, but with Paul Rudd as our leading man, it’s possible that the franchise could continue without Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne.
So far, we’ve seen three Ant-Man films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and Pym and Van Dyne have also made appearances in earlier Avengers movies. At this point, it remains uncertain if they will reappear in this series, but they could potentially feature in upcoming movies like “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” With their impressive intellect and experience navigating the Quantum Realm, these characters could prove to be valuable assets during the climactic phases of the multiverse saga.
There is a chance that their role was reduced toward the end of the multiverse phase, as Kang was initially set to be the main villain for the upcoming Avengers movies. However, those plans were pivoted toward Robert Downey Jr’s forthcoming return in MCU as he will be playing Doctor Doom. However, it will likely never be revealed just how much Marvel Studios changed plans. Still, they certainly were adjusted, with those involved in the Ant-Man franchise being impacted, given the experience they had with Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Pym and Van Dyne have been brilliant supporting characters within the MCU and have certainly played a significant role in developing the Ant-Man franchise. However, given how many new characters are about to enter the MCU with the mutants, it makes sense that Marvel wants to trim the roster slightly. As two of the older heroes in the MCU, it’s unlikely that there will be too many complaints about this decision.
