Marvel Zombies is an official continuation of the What If? Season 1 storyline, which was inspired by Marvel Zombies comic books depicting a world where a zombie epidemic has spread on Earth. In this scenario, The Avengers attempt to halt the outbreak but instead become infected themselves. This results in an even more dangerous form of zombies, as they possess superpowers and show signs of higher cognitive function compared to regular zombies, making them a greater threat to the Earth’s heroes and villains trying to repel the horde.

Marvel Zombies To Feature Beloved Addition

Marvel Zombies Showrunner Bryan Andrews spoke with CBM and shared insights on the origin of this four-episode miniseries. “Brad and Kevin [Feige] were so enamored with the What If…? episode. They exclaimed, ‘We need more zombie action!’ Their suggestion was to create a sequel, but instead of just another episode, let’s make it a mini-movie event spanning four episodes. Consequently, we’re taking things up a notch.

Stepping into the realm of cinematic critique, I must say that the upcoming sequel to the “What If…?” episode truly amps up the excitement by reintroducing one of the most cherished characters from its predecessor. Essentially, we’re getting another dose of Zombie Captain America, who makes a brief yet impactful appearance. To put it simply, “Zombie Cap returns for a guest spot,” as Andrews eloquently puts it. This iconic figure shares some intense moments with a key character, and I have no doubt that fans will be thrilled by this encounter.

Just like in “What If…?”, the animated series “Marvel Zombies” will have many well-known actors lending their voices to the characters. So when Andrews mentions that Zombie Captain America will square off against a main character, it implies a clash between two big names from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Although it’s not yet known if all the actors involved have been revealed or only those who have been announced so far, “Marvel Zombies” boasts the talents of Awkwafina, David Harbour, Simu Liu, Elizabeth Olsen, Randall Park, Florence Pugh, Hailee Steinfeld, Dominique Thorne, and Iman Vellani.

Andrews shared a small piece of information regarding the action in the forthcoming mini-series. He mentioned that since it’s rated TV-MA, they won’t have to hold back. They can be more intense and edgy. In other words, they go all out – no pun on the phrase intended. It promises to be quite extreme and unconventional. Marvel enthusiasts will get a chance to witness this extreme side of it this fall when it debuts on Disney+ streaming service.

Marvel Zombies is set to debut on October 3.
