Each character presents their distinct martial art styles and philosophies during confrontations.
This analysis thoughtfully explores and rates the top martial artists within the Marvel Universe, emphasizing their remarkable skills, beliefs, and notable accomplishments. Regardless of whether they rely on brute strength or a deep comprehension of fighting strategies, these martial arts masters have built solid reputations as the finest in the field. Here’s the sequence in which they appear.
9 Mister X
The Best There Is
- First Appearance: Wolverine Volume. 2, #159
- Reality: Earth-616
- Base of Operations: The Cube Prison
As a child, Mister X had a morbid fascination with death that would later define his life as one of Marvel’s deadliest supervillains and top martial artists. Little is known about Mister X’s past before he became the notorious assassin, but it is certain that he possesses low-level telepathic abilities. Mister X employs his martial arts skills not for self-expression or personal growth, but as a tool to achieve his ultimate goal – death. Obsessed with taking lives, Mister X has mastered every known form of combat, be it armed or unarmed, and is proficient in all existing martial arts styles.
Beyond just having a fixation on death, Mister X’s wicked ideology revolves around becoming the deadliest assassin in history. He roamed the globe, studying under various masters, then outdoing and ultimately killing them. This grim path was leading him to realize his goal until he crossed paths with Wolverine. The fateful meeting marked the beginning of Mister X’s villainous transformation within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), with key events like the Siege and his collaboration with the Thunderbolts standing out among his most significant involvements.
8 Cat
Shen Kuei
- First Appearance: Master of Kung Fu #38
- Reality: Earth-616
- Base of Operations: Hong Kong
Shen Kuei, also known as the Cat, is not categorized as either hero or villain within the DCEU. Skilled in espionage, Shen Kuei was a martial artist who initially served as a spy for the Chinese government but later became an independent agent.
Known exclusively for his exceptional martial arts skills, Shen’s standing as a martial artist places him among the top-tier martial artists within the Marvel universe. Yet, his ranking remains relatively low because he lacks significant achievements beyond being a formidable opponent to Shang Chi – an accomplishment that is quite remarkable in itself.
7 Wolverine
James Logan Howlett
- First Appearance: Incredible Hulk #180
- Reality: Earth-616
- Base of Operations: N/A
Known for his fierce and brutal demeanor, Wolverine maintains a dual identity – that of an exceptional superhero and a formidable assassin. Born in the late 19th century to affluent parents, he later adopted the name Logan when his extraordinary animalistic traits emerged during childhood, distancing him from his family.
Logan’s odyssey as a martial artist commenced when he crossed paths with the Japanese telepath and martial master, Ogun, who served as his mentor before Experiment X. Known for his formidable skills in martial arts within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Logan has demonstrated expertise in every known Earthly combat style. Moreover, he is esteemed as one of the most proficient trainers in the MCU, having imparted hand-to-hand combat techniques to notable heroes such as Black Widow, Rogue, Storm, Nightcrawler, and Colossus, thereby earning his well-deserved reputation.
6 Daredevil
Matthew Murdock
- First Appearance: Daredevil #1
- Reality: Earth-616
- Base of Operations: Hell’s Kitchen, New York City
Matt Murdock’s journey as Daredevil began during his youth when he lost his sight after protecting a blind old man from an approaching truck. Although Matt’s extraordinary abilities are tied to his physically enhanced body due to radiation exposure instead of his eyesight, he proves to be far more formidable in combat than appearances suggest. A self-taught boxer and the exceptional pupil of Stick, the senior grandmaster and leader of the Chaste order within the MCU, Matt is one of the most accomplished fighters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Due to his exceptional strategic mind in fights and his unique blend of various martial arts forms such as boxing, Ninjutsu, Taekwondo, Judo, Krav Maga, Karate, Capoeira, Silat, Aki-Jujutsu, and Savate, he is considered by his instructor to hold at least the rank of tenth-degree black belt in ninjutsu. Moreover, he has matched skills with many martial arts masters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Wolverine, Black Panther, Iron Fist, Karnak, Taskmaster, and even Captain America. This has firmly established his reputation as ‘The Man Without Fear.’
5 Black Panther
T’Challa
- First Appearance: Fantastic Four #52
- Reality: Earth-616
- Base of Operations: Wakanda
Beyond being known as the MCU’s most recognized necromancer, T’Challa, as the Black Panther, is also renowned as one of its finest martial artists. Born to King T’Chaka, T’Challa’s superhero career takes off after his encounter with the Fantastic Four, and it continues to grow from there. He goes on to join the Avengers, lose his panther title, experience the invasion of Wakanda, reunite with the Fantastic Four, participate in the Doomwar, join the Illuminati, and ultimately establish the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda.
From birth, T’Challa was groomed for combat training due to his royal lineage. By the time he ascended the throne, he had become proficient in nearly all forms of hand-to-hand combat. Though he doesn’t favor a particular fighting style, he is renowned as one of the greatest martial artists, having matched skills with figures like Daredevil, Captain America, and Iron Fist, and effortlessly defeating Wolverine on two occasions. His abilities in combat are such that his opponents often struggle to keep up, which explains his reputation as a martial arts master.
4 Gamora
Gamora Zen Whoberi Ben Titan
- First Appearance: Strange Tales #180
- Reality: Earth-616 (Currently Displaced)
- Base of Operations: N/A
Adopted by the powerful Titan Thanos and the last of her kind, a Zen-Whoberi named Gamora, was brought up to be an unparalleled assassin. Her father, Thanos himself, honed her combat skills, making them among the best in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Switching allegiances between hero and villain throughout the MCU, Gamora’s story is anything but ordinary.
From young days with Thanos to teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy and participating in the Infinity Wars, she is renowned for mastering a staggering 83.4% of all combat styles in the cosmos. Widely regarded as one of the universe’s most skilled martial artists, she remains an elite assassin. Although Gamora may not be the MCU’s most illustrious hero, her prowess in battle is undoubtedly respected.
3 Iron Fist
Daniel Rand
- First Appearance: Marvel Premiere #15
- Reality: Earth-616
- Base of Operations: Thunder Dojo, Harlem, New York City.
Born in K’un-Lun and inheritor of Rand Corporation’s business empire, Daniel Rand was the initial Iron Fist and widely recognized as one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s top martial artists. As an orphaned child, Danny’s martial arts training wasn’t so much a personal choice driven by heroic inclinations but rather a vital necessity stemming from his Iron Fist lineage.
In his role as K’un-Lun master and the immortal Iron Fist, Danny boasts an extraordinary skill set in martial arts, having virtually mastered every form on Earth – from Ninjutsu to Muay Thai, Aikido, Kunlunquan, Judo, and Wing Chun, just to name a few. After giving up his Iron Fist title, Danny’s understanding and prowess in martial arts continued to grow, particularly after taking on his disciple, Pei – the young monk. Despite his heroic exploits as the Iron Fist across the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it is his mastery of martial arts that truly sets him apart, earning him a prominent spot in this discussion.
2 Junzo Muto
N/A
- First Appearance: New Warriors, Vol 2, #5
- Reality: Earth-616
- Base of Operations: N/A
The Iron Fist usurper, Junzo Muto, is one of the MCU’s martial arts masters, but on the villain side of things. Not much is known of his early life other than his undoubted talent for the art of combat. Under his mentor and teacher, Hiromitsu, Juzo became one of the world’s deadliest assassins and soon surpassed his master and ultimately became the leader of the Hand, an assassination guild.
With an ability to absorb combat techniques, Junzo stands as a skilled martial arts expert, surpassing Danny Rand – from whom he took the Iron Fist power. While it’s unknown the extent of his martial art repertoire, his victories over Danny Rand (Iron Fist), Steel Serpent, and Night Thrasher indicate that he belongs to the MCU’s top-tier class of martial masters.
1 Shang Chi
Zheng Shang Chi
- First Appearance: Special Marvel Edition #15
- Reality: Earth-616
- Base of Operations: N/A
In a nutshell, Shang Chi – the unquestionable Kung Fu expert in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – is actually the son of the infamous criminal mastermind, Fu Manchu, who trained him to be an unparalleled assassin. During his time when he broke away from his father, Shang Chi found himself at odds with the Cat, Shen Kuei, as their paths crossed due to their shared background in martial arts and espionage.
Setting aside the influence of the Ten Rings, I’d humbly say that I consider Shang Chi to be an unparalleled warrior. Born into a life of training in ninja arts and various martial disciplines, he is also a skilled practitioner of the Deadly Hand technique. To add to his impressive resume, he has guided Spiderman in mastering these arts before joining the Avengers. Although Shang Chi might not be Marvel’s most imposing superhero, there’s no doubt that he is its most imposing martial arts mentor.
