It appears that superhero games from Marvel and DC are prevalent nowadays, largely due to the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans of this genre have been spoiled with a vast array of games, and there’s no sign of this trend abating. In 2022, Marvel enthusiasts were offered something quite special in the form of “Marvel’s Midnight Suns“. Although the game didn’t achieve the impact the studio had hoped for, the ideas behind it shouldn’t be discarded.
Instead of most other Marvel games, Marvel’s Midnight Suns stands out by emphasizing the supernatural aspects of the Marvel universe. It offers an unusual blend of turn-based combat, deckbuilding, and RPG mechanics, creating a truly distinctive gaming experience that has yet to be replicated in Marvel games. Although it appears that this concept may not be repeated, here’s hoping that a studio will one day pick up this idea, perhaps even independently from Firaxis’ take on this universe.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns is Too Unique to Let Die
Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Gameplay Was A Fantastic Ride
Initially diving into Marvel’s Midnight Suns, players encountered numerous fresh concepts to grasp. Primarily, the game’s primary battle mechanism offered an innovative twist on the superhero genre. Instead of following the typical turn-based or action-adventure format, the game incorporated a card-building system where players constructed stacks of potent abilities for each hero. Each character had their unique deck, and as players advanced, they unveiled and enhanced new decks. This seemingly slow, strategic approach, when combined with traditional turn-based combat, surprisingly resulted in a dynamic and thrilling gameplay experience overall.
Additionally, Firaxis incorporated Role-Playing Game (RPG) elements and base-building features in Marvel’s Midnight Suns. During the intervals between missions, players have the freedom to explore their customizable base, interact with all the heroes they’ve enlisted. They can enhance their bond with these characters, train them, participate in various events with them, engage in numerous side activities, and much more. To add to this, the Abbey is brimming with discoveries and new utilities to unlock, providing players with a wealth of content to explore.
Future Marvel Games Could Take the Midnight Suns’ Concept Even Further
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve been captivated by Marvel’s Midnight Suns and its unique blend of genres. It had the potential to be something truly extraordinary. Unfortunately, despite the promise, the game didn’t quite hit the mark commercially and has yet to see any new content beyond the initially promised post-launch DLC.
However, I can’t help but feel that there’s so much more this game could offer if given another shot. Its foundation is ripe with possibilities, and I sincerely hope that either Firaxis or another studio recognizes this potential and decides to breathe new life into it.
It’s clear that Firaxis intended to continue the story or create more adventures, as suggested by the post-credit scene in Marvel’s Midnight Suns featuring Doctor Doom. It would be terrific if they could bring this story to fruition, even if it’s in a scaled-down version. If that doesn’t happen, another studio should step up and explore the concept. The game was fantastic, and with the right developers, its potential for growth is limitless.
Certainly, there’s no lack of upcoming superhero games, but given that Marvel’s Midnight Suns didn’t perform well financially, it seems unlikely that Firaxis will revisit this genre in the immediate future – at least not until later on. Nevertheless, I strongly believe that such a concept deserves another chance, even if it takes a few years. A turn-based deckbuilding RPG featuring superheroes is simply too intriguing to be left untouched.
