Summary
- Marvel has many anti-heroes, like Punisher, Elektra, Black Cat, Deadpool, and Nebula.
- These characters may not always make moral choices but often display moments of heroism.
- Traits like ruthlessness, vengeance, and shady allegiances set these characters apart from traditional heroes.
In the Marvel Comics universe, not all characters possess the qualities necessary to be an Avenger. Many well-known characters from the comic book franchise’s past have traits that are far from heroic, such as personality flaws, self-centered tendencies, or vulnerabilities to vices. These characters often embody the complexities of anti-heroes rather than traditional heroes.
In addition to being a popular Taylor Swift song, the term “anti-hero” is used to describe a main character in a story who carries out actions that may not be considered morally right by the audience. These Marvel characters sometimes even come close to being outright villains, but they’ve shown glimpses of compassion now and then. Let me present to you Marvel’s most formidable anti-heroes. (Note: I’ve made a slight adjustment for a more natural and easy reading flow.)
10. Elektra
Daredevil’s Ex-Lover Is An Expert Assassin
Name(s) | Elektra Natchios, Elektra, Daredevil, Daughter of the Hand, Woman Without Fear |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Avengers Emergency Response Squad, The Hand, Heroes for Hire, Savage Avengers, Thunderbolts |
Abilities | Mixed martial arts, mind switching, heightened instincts, hypnosis, telekinesis, precognition |
First Appeared | Daredevil #168 (1980) |
Creators | Frank Miller |
Portrayed By | Jennifer Garner (Daredevil, Elektra, Deadpool & Wolverine) Élodie Yung (Daredevil series, The Defenders series) |
Daredevil might inhabit a more shadowy part of the Marvel universe compared to other characters, yet he retains numerous heroic traits. Conversely, Elektra, who often interacts with Daredevil as an ally, love interest, and foe, lacks these qualities. Modeled after the dangerous women from martial arts movies, she exhibits a greater level of brutality and ruthlessness compared to Matt Murdock. In the comics, Elektra has shown little concern for a person’s innocence when taking lives.
Despite her troubled past and romantic entanglement with Daredevil, Elektra occasionally found the strength to act heroically, assisting Murdock in his battles against Kingpin and The Hand. Interestingly, Elektra possesses abilities beyond those of Murdock, such as the power to swap minds with others and use telekinesis. She represents many of Matt Murdock’s darker traits in a seductive and formidable fighter.
9. Black Cat
Spider-Man’s Toxic Situationship Is As Deadly As She Is Seductive
Name(s) | Felicia Hardy, Black Cat |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Heroes for Hire, Secret Defenders, Thieves Guild |
Abilities | Retractable claws, mixed martial arts, tychokinesis |
First Appeared | Amazing Spider-Man #194 (1979) |
Creators | Marv Wolfman, Keith Pollard |
Portrayed By | Felicity Jones (The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Erica Lindbeck (Spider-Man video game, Spider-Man 2 video-game) |
Similar to Elektra, Felicia Hardy, also known as Black Cat, is distinguished by her tendency to change sides. Initially appearing as an adversary to Spider-Man, she channeled her resentment towards men into acts of violence and burglaries. Yet, there’s a unique bond between Felicia and Spider-Man, which has been depicted in the comics through a tumultuous relationship. In her attempts to win over Spider-Man, she has demonstrated heroic qualities when motivated to do so.
Although Black Cat wasn’t born with superpowers, she was enchanted by Doctor Strange to possess extraordinary reflexes and retractable talons. Moreover, she exhibits a unique psychic ability called tychokinesis, allowing her to influence probability fields, or in simpler terms, to bring misfortune upon her adversaries. This power, of course, can be quite troublesome for Peter Parker.
8. The Punisher
One Of Marvel’s Most Brutal Characters Is Still Human
Name(s) | Frank Castle, Francis Castiglione, The Punisher, Captain America, War Machine, Scourge of the Underworld |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | The Hand, Heroes for Hire, Savage Avengers, Secret Avengers, Secret Defenders, Thunderbolts |
Abilities | Peak human strength, mixed martial arts, master marksman |
First Appeared | Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1973) |
Creators | Gerry Conway, Ross Andru, John Romita Sr. |
Portrayed By | Dolph Lundgren (The Punisher), Thomas Jane (The Punisher remake), Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone), Jon Bernthal (Daredevil series, The Punisher series, Daredevil: Born Again) |
Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, is one of Marvel’s most renowned anti-heroes, yet he stands out among these characters for his distinctly human qualities. A former Marine Corps marksman, Castle employs his military skills in an unofficial capacity as a vigilante, combating crime through harsh tactics like torture and lethal force. This often places him at odds with more traditional heroes such as Daredevil and Spider-Man.
Instead, Castle has chosen to abandon his skull-and-bones armor for loftier goals, including inheriting the War Machine role after James Rhodes’ passing in the “Civil War 2” storyline. Despite being able to withstand a great deal of damage, he lacks any spectacular powers; instead, he relies solely on his unadulterated human strength. Yet, his fixation on revenge and justice can lead him to act impulsively and carelessly at times.
7. Deadpool
There’s A Lot More To Him Than Being A Funny Assassin
Name(s) | Wade Wilson, Deadpool, Merc with a Mouth |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Avengers Unity Division, Deadpool Corps, Heroes for Hire, Hydra’s Avengers, Secret Defenders, Thunderbolts, War Avengers, X-Force |
Abilities | Super-strength, super-speed, mixed martial arts, weapons master, regeneration, fourth wall breaking |
First Appeared | New Mutants #98 (1990) |
Creators | Fabian Nicieza, Rob Liefield |
Portrayed By | Ryan Reynolds (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Deadpool, Deadpool 2, Deadpool & Wolverine) |
Deadpool isn’t just morally gray; he openly admits it by breaking the fourth wall. Initially introduced as a villain to X-Force, he later transformed into a captivating anti-hero in his solo series. Fans familiar with Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal will recognize that Wade Wilson was once a mercenary who developed cancer, underwent unconventional treatments, and eventually became a mutant with regenerative abilities.
Deadpool’s remarkable regenerative powers, humorous in their near-death defying feats, are one of his standout abilities. Moreover, he excels in combat, frequently wielding either katanas or pistols, leading to intense and gory battles. Although Deadpool’s morals may be questionable, he has regularly served as a hero within the Marvel universe, teaming up with other anti-heroes like Wolverine.
6. Nebula
This Daughter Of Thanos Puts Up A Good Fight
Name(s) | Nebula |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Children of Thanos, Dark Guardians, Guardians of the Galaxy |
Abilities | Cybernetic enhancements, super-strength, self-sustenance |
First Appeared | Avengers #257 (1985) |
Creators | Roger Stern, John Buscema |
Portrayed By | Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Avengers Infinity War, Avengers Endgame, Thor: Love & Thunder), Ashly Burch (Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series) |
Without a doubt, Nebula gained significant fame after Karen Gillan’s portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, her comic book background had already demonstrated her immense power. Adopted by Thanos, Nebula is a ruthless space mercenary who underwent numerous cybernetic enhancements at the hands of Dr. Mandibus, granting her exceptional strength and physical abilities surpassing those of most human characters in the galaxy.
Moreover, similar to her father, Nebula also obtained the Infinity Gauntlet – a powerful artifact wielded by the mightiest Marvel characters. Fortunately, she employed it to dismantle Thanos’ divine abilities. Regrettably, she continues to live as an outlaw for the majority of time and has only occasionally teamed up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, unlike her MCU counterpart who shows more heroic tendencies.
5. Moon Knight
This Brutal and Deranged Man Has An Egyptian God In His Corner
Name(s) | Marc Spector, Steven Grant, Jake Lockley, Moon Knight, Mr. Knight, Fist of Khonshu |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Defenders, Heroes for Hire, Marvel Knights, Midnight Mission, Midnight Sons, Secret Avengers, West Coast Avengers |
Abilities | Lunar strength, power absorption, mixed martial arts, weapons master, immortality, necromancy, self-sustenance |
First Appeared | Werewolf By Night #32 (1975) |
Creators | Doug Moench, Don Perlin |
Portrayed By | Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight) |
In Marvel Comics, most characters with close ties to actual deities are generally quite powerful. Yet, Marc Spector stands apart from them due to his struggle with dissociative identity disorder. Unlike others who can manage when called by their divine counterparts, Spector’s control fades when Khonshu, the Egyptian moon god, summons him. Additionally, unlike many others whose powers stay consistent, Spector’s abilities vary based on which personality he currently embodies.
As a die-hard movie fan, I can’t help but draw parallels between Deadpool and Moon Knight. Just like Wade Wilson, Moon Knight has a military background that comes in handy, but what truly sets him apart is his exceptional pain threshold. In fact, even the formidable Taskmaster admitted he’d prefer not to copy Moon Knight’s abilities because of the character’s unwavering resilience when it comes to absorbing blows. To top it off, Marc Spector has been brought back from the dead multiple times to carry on serving Khonshu, making him quite immortal in his own unique way.
4. Mystique
She’s Been Both A Friend And Enemy To The X-Men
Name(s) | Raven Darkhölme, Mystique, Foxx, Surge |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Astonishing Avengers, Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, The Hand, Hellfire Club, Marauders, Weapon X-Force, X-Corps, X-Men |
Abilities | Metamorphing, healing factor, mixed martial arts |
First Appeared | Ms. Marvel #16 (1978) |
Creators | Chris Claremont, Jim Mooney |
Portrayed By | Rebecca Romjin (X-Men, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand), Jennifer Lawrence (X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix) |
Many of the X-Men possess extraordinary abilities, but few are as fluid in their allegiances as Mystique. Known as Raven Darkhölme, this mutant chameleon has employed her shape-shifting talents for both noble and nefarious purposes. For instance, she’s been involved in assassinating significant historical figures or collaborating with the X-Men to defeat entities like Apocalypse. Furthermore, her tumultuous connection with Wolverine, which dates back over several decades, is noteworthy.
In battles, Mystique isn’t limited to merely shapeshifting; her powers have been amplified in the comics, granting her abilities such as growing wings, sharpening her claws, and developing natural body armor. Above all, Raven demonstrates remarkable intelligence and is difficult to deceive, frequently acting as a secret agent on behalf of Professor X. However, it’s wise for Xavier to maintain some distance from her as well.
3. Wolverine
One Of Marvel’s Strongest Heroes Is Nearly Impossible To Kill
Name(s) | James Howlett, Logan, Wolverine, Weapon X |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Avengers, Avengers Unity Division, Midnight Sons, New Avengers, New Fantastic Four, Savage Avengers, Secret Defenders, X-Force, X-Men |
Abilities | Adamantium claws, super-strength, super-speed, mixed martial arts, weapons master, regeneration |
First Appeared | Incredible Hulk #180 (1974) |
Creators | Len Wein, John Romita, Roy Thomas |
Portrayed By | Cal Dodd (X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men ’97), Hugh Jackman (X-Men films, Deadpool & Wolverine), Steve Blum (various video games), Henry Cavill (Deadpool & Wolverine) |
Time and again, I find myself in awe at Wolverine’s incredible knack for surviving the unsurvivable – from withstanding nuclear explosions to being torn asunder by the Hulk. As an ardent follower of the Avengers and X-Men, Logan embodies the essence of a valiant Marvel hero. Regrettably, he carries within him a heavy burden, grappling with his inner demons that drive him towards excessive drinking and solitude, even towards his fellow mutant brethren.
What truly set Wolverine apart as a standout character in the Marvel universe was his anti-hero persona, which was quite refreshing compared to more traditional figures like Captain America and Spider-Man during that period. Despite his incredible longevity and ability to withstand almost anything, Wolverine wouldn’t surpass characters with divine strength or magical powers when it comes to raw power in the Marvel universe. Unfortunately, he lacks the might of a deity or the enchantment of a powerful sorcerer.
2. Loki
Thor’s Brother Is Always Up To Something
Name(s) | Loki Laufeyson, God of Mischief, Prince of Evil |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Asgardians, Mighty Avengers |
Abilities | Sorcery, telekinesis, shapeshifting, super-strength, healing factor |
First Appeared | Journey Into Mystery #85 (1962) |
Creators | Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Jack Kirby |
Portrayed By | Tom Hiddleston (Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Love & Thunder, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Loki), Sophia DiMartino (Loki), Jack Veal (Loki), Richard E. Grant (Loki), DeObia Oparei (Loki) |
As a die-hard fan of cinema, I’ve always seen Loki as the epitome of comic book villainy, with his scheming leading directly to the creation of the Avengers back in 1963. Yet, the enduring appeal of this character has granted writers a chance to delve into his complex past and emotions, transforming him from a traditional villain into an anti-hero.
Sure, Loki’s done some questionable deeds, but he’s also shown a softer side at times. As I follow the twists and turns of this intriguing character, it’s fascinating to see how the writers continue to challenge our perceptions of who he truly is.
Loki, often portrayed as an anti-hero in the Marvel universe, has achieved notable feats such as assuming the position of Sorcerer Supreme from Doctor Strange, and aiding in the defeat of his deranged “King Loki” counterpart during the Secret Wars. Despite being an untrustworthy Asgardian deity, Loki has demonstrated potential for good, self-sacrifice, and even affection, though this love is mainly directed towards himself, as per the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
1. Scarlet Witch
It’s Hard To Find A Marvel Character Stronger Than Wanda
Name(s) | Wanda Maximoff, Scarlet Witch, Living Darkhold, Emperor of Magic |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Avengers, Avengers Unity Division, Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Hydra’s Avengers, Secret Defenders, Strange Academy, West Coast Avengers |
Abilities | Witchcraft, hexcraft, chaos magic, reality warping, energy manipulation, flight, time manipulation, necromancy |
First Appeared | X-Men #4 (1964) |
Creators | Stan Lee, Jack Kirby |
Portrayed By | Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), Emily O’Brien (Marvel’s Midnight Sons) |
Amongst various Marvel Comics character rankings, Scarlet Witch stands out as one of the franchise’s top-tier anti-heroes. Wanda Maximoff embodies the qualities of a remarkable hero – an unwavering commitment to do good and superpowers that would significantly boost the Avengers’ strength as a team. However, her loyalty has been tested by her personal struggles and family ties.
Remarkably, Magneto is the father of the Scarlet Witch, which fosters some allegiance towards the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in her. The ‘House of M’ storyline reveals Wanda’s sorrow almost wiping out mutants across the entire universe. Among Wanda’s extraordinary abilities are manipulating reality, influencing probabilities, and assuming the role of a Nexus Being, giving her control over the Marvel Universe as a whole.
