As a longtime Marvel enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of Spider-Man through various mediums, I must say that the introduction of symbiotes in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was nothing short of exhilarating! The intricate storytelling and the way they’ve been woven into the existing narrative is truly commendable.

Miles Morales, it wasn’t until Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 that we learned Oscorp was aware of its arrival on Earth, Dr. Curtis Connors lost his arm due to fear of the symbiote, and Harry Osborn willingly bonded with it. It’s also worth noting that Peter Parker was destined to bond with the symbiote as well, and since Harry already knew Peter is Spider-Man, there were no surprises when the symbiote returned to him, transforming into the Venom monster.

In a hint at the extensive symbiote storyline, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 introduces several elements. It subtly suggests Knull and Carnage, provides Peter Parker with an Anti-Venom symbiote, and features Mary Jane Watson in a boss fight as the Scream. The game also implies that there is a symbiote collective consciousness and raises the possibility that any individual bonded to a symbiote, even if they no longer possess one, is connected to this hive mind. If MJ’s brief appearance as Scream is significant in any future revisions or additions to the lore in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, it could mean that she might be linked to this symbiote collective.

Mary Jane Watson is Likely Embedded in the Symbiote Hive Mind

A big point of contention in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is Peter Parker being tethered to the symbiote hive mind and thus requiring Martin Li’s Mr. Negative to pour his energy into Peter’s subconscious and awaken a restorative Anti-Venom symbiote for Peter to possess. This is highly divisive because it’s unclear if the white-and-black symbiote is now a permanent fixture in Peter’s body or if he could remove it if he wished, and if there is only seemingly one game left in the Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise there is a lot of explaining it’ll need to do to make sense of everything the symbiotes have stirred.

It’s possible that Peter’s connection to the symbiote also linked him psychically to the hive mind, even though he’s not physically bound to it. In a similar vein, Mary Jane Watson might share this psychological link due to her past experiences with symbiotes. Additionally, instead of being revived using negative energy and receiving a healing symbiote, MJ could still be affected by the hive mind since she didn’t undergo that specific treatment.

It’s possible to argue that, compared to the length of time Peter possessed the symbiote, MJ might have only been a host for a relatively short period. However, her intense emotional outbursts and aggressive behavior during the Scream boss fight imply an instantaneous bonding process that placed her in a state similar to what Peter experienced during his own boss fight. This is further supported by the fact that Scream already looked like an alien creature instead of wearing the black symbiote suit like Harry or Peter’s did, and it didn’t appear to wear body armor like the symbiote did with them.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 Has Unending Questions to Answer

In Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, it’s possible that Peter’s Anti-Venom abilities could remove any influence of the hive mind from MJ. However, this will require further exploration. If the next Marvel’s Spider-Man game doesn’t hint at MJ being connected to the hive mind, then Insomniac’s response might be self-explanatory, offering little room for additional interpretation.

In simpler terms, the symbiotes could significantly impact the series’ storyline based on hints dropped so far, but keeping Green Goblin in the background is crucial. It remains to be seen how Insomniac will balance all these plotlines when Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 eventually releases, and it would be nice if a follow-up game continued the suspense until then.
