As someone who has been a longtime fan of the Spider-Man franchise and a proud owner of a PlayStation 5, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and disappointment upon hearing about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s upcoming PC release.
In 2023, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 debuted exclusively on the PlayStation 5 and swiftly emerged as one of the year’s most successful games. Much like its precursor, the game received overwhelming critical praise, with many critics hailing it as exceptional. On OpenCritic, for instance, it earned a Top Critic Average of 90, with an impressive 97% of reviewers recommending the game. The title’s reviews were so glowing that it was even nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards. Moreover, within just 24 hours of its October release, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had sold approximately 2.5 million units, a record for the fastest selling PlayStation Studios game up to that point. By April 2024, Sony announced that global sales had surpassed 11 million copies, a significant achievement given its exclusive availability on one platform.
It’s anticipated that “Spider-Man 2” will surpass its current sales threshold due to its imminent availability on a wider variety of devices than ever before. At New York Comic Con 2024, Insomniac Games unveiled that “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” would debut on PC on January 30, 2025, approximately 15 months after its initial launch – the shortest exclusivity period for a “Spider-Man” game on PlayStation so far. In contrast to past games in the series, which took around 2 to 4 years to appear on Steam and the Epic Games Store, this move brings “Spider-Man 2” to PC more swiftly.
The Reveal of Spider-Man 2’s PC Port Came With an Unfortunate Announcement
Fans Were Hoping that Insomniac Would Release Story DLC for Spider-Man 2
It’s been speculated for quite some time now that Insomniac might eventually release some story-focused DLC packs for Spider-Man 2, given the success of their previous web-slinging game, Marvel’s Spider-Man. You see, the initial game was followed by three narrative expansions not long after its release in 2018. These DLC packs for Spider-Man, collectively known as The City That Never Sleeps, were rolled out monthly, much like an ongoing series. The first of these expansions dropped in October 2018, with the final chapter wrapping up the trilogy in December that year.
Some Spider-Man 2 DLCs Were Apparently in Development At One Point
Based on Insomniac’s approach with the initial Spider-Man game, it seemed reasonable to anticipate that Spider-Man 2 would also get a series of story expansions. However, this isn’t the case. But, according to leaked internal documents from Insomniac following the ransomware attack in December 2023, there were plans for a trilogy of free DLCs for Spider-Man 2 at one point. This is unlike The City that Never Sleeps, and similar to God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla, which was offered free to owners of God of War: Ragnarok.
The three upcoming expansions for Spider-Man 2 were reportedly titled Beetle Infestation, Extreme Carnage, and Spider-Verse Anomaly. These titles appear to reveal their storylines. Beetle Infestation was likely going to focus on the quick-moving supervillain Janice Lincoln, also known as Beetle. Extreme Carnage might have centered around the blood-red Symbiote character, and Spider-Verse Anomaly could have been a crossover with Sony’s recent animated Spider-Verse movies. These downloadable content (DLC) packages seemed to be relatively small in size and would only offer a single mission each. Beetle Infestation and Extreme Carnage were expected to feature individual boss battles, while Spider-Verse Anomaly may have included a Spider-Verse-themed visual effect.
The Cancelation of Spider-Man 2’s DLC is a Shame, But At Least a PC Port is On the Way
It remains uncertain as to why the rumored additions to Spider-Man 2 were scrapped. Perhaps Insomniac and Sony determined that producing free downloadable content for SM 2 wasn’t a financially viable decision, or if they were paid, the content wasn’t substantial enough to justify charging customers. Whatever the reason, it’s disappointing that these expansions will never be released. On a positive note, fans can anticipate the upcoming PC port of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
