Marvels Spider-Man 3’s Open-World is Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Marvels Spider-Man 3's Open-World is Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

As a longtime fan of the Spider-Man franchise, I have been thoroughly impressed with Insomniac Games’ take on the iconic web-slinger. The studio has delivered an expansive New York City that feels alive and a joy to explore, making for an immersive experience. However, after three games, I can’t help but feel that Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is facing a major decision when it comes to its open world.

While Insomniac Games is currently engrossed in developing “Marvel’s Wolverine,” they are simultaneously mapping out the future of “Marvel’s Spider-Man 3.” Leaks suggest a promising future for the “Marvel’s Spider-Man” series, and the success of its sequel has ensured a three-part saga. Although Insomniac has numerous options for story progression, creating an engaging open-world for “Marvel’s Spider-Man 3” could prove to be a challenging feat.

Across three different games, Insomniac has delivered an expansive New York City for Spider-Man to swing through. That has made for a great experience, but there’s only so much further the studio can take the iconic city. It also can’t really take Spider-Man away from it either, as the web-swinger has always called it home. So, that has seemingly left Insomniac with a major decision to make about the design of the open world.

Insomniac Games Can Only Take New York City So Far

In simpler terms, playing Marvel’s Spider-Man offered an authentic experience of New York City, beautifully crafted by Insomniac. The game presented Manhattan island with famous landmarks and added iconic Marvel structures like the Daily Bugle, Sanctum Sanctorum, and Avengers Tower. Combined with exhilarating gameplay, it’s no surprise that this game stands out as an exceptional superhero title.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed an exciting progression in the expansion of the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe. In Miles Morales, Insomniac added some snow to the city for us to enjoy during wintertime. It was a nice touch, but in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, they took it up a notch by allowing us to explore Brooklyn and Queens as well. These additions nearly doubled the size of the first two games, making for an incredible gaming experience. However, with only the Bronx and Staten Island left to discover, I can’t help but feel that it might be time for something fresh after spending three games in the same city’s confines.

Spider-Man and New York City Are Too Connected to Leave it Behind

From a fan’s perspective, I believe adding more to New York City in the next game is an intriguing idea. However, I can’t help but wonder if it would offer enough novelty for players to remain engaged. There have been concerns that the city feels too familiar, and we might need a fresh perspective. Still, removing Spider-Man from his beloved New York could be a risky move, and careful planning is essential to keep the fanbase invested.

Spider-Man has strong ties to New York City, where most of his films and video games are set. Over time, Spider-Man and New York have formed an indelible bond, much like Batman and Gotham City. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, efforts were made to alter this dynamic in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” but the absence of Manhattan seemed out of sync with fan expectations, despite positive reviews. Subsequently, no one has attempted a similar approach.

While it’s an option, removing Spider-Man from New York City for Insomniac could be a daring move with potential risks. On the other hand, given that we’ve played three games in this city, fans are craving some novelty. As the franchise progresses, it may become challenging for Insomniac to add enough diversity to New York City to keep it engaging. This leaves Insomniac at a juncture; let’s hope they manage to blend Spider-Man’s iconic elements with fresh content.
