The following contains mild spoilers for Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Insomniac’s *Marvel’s Spider-Man* games, particularly *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2*, have created a lot of unresolved plot points. I worry that *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2* tries to do too much with its subplots, and if *Marvel’s Spider-Man 3* is truly the final game, it won’t be able to wrap everything up satisfactorily. A recent rumor, reported by MP1st, suggests that these storylines could end up feeling rushed and incomplete.

A new rumor suggests Insomniac Games is looking to build on the limited Spider-Verse connection established in *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2* – specifically, the Spider-Bot collectible hunt – and potentially include Miguel O’Hara, Spider-Man 2099, in *Marvel’s Spider-Man 3*. Adding another Spider-Person could easily complicate the story and overwhelm the game, making it hard to follow a clear narrative.
Spider-Man 2099 Had His Era, and He’s Too Good for a Half-Baked Cameo

Spider-Man 2099 was a standout character in the video games *Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions* and *Spider-Man: Edge of Time*. *Shattered Dimensions* helped pave the way for the Spider-Verse concept, and *Edge of Time* – which is personally my favorite Spider-Man game – offered a fantastic and original science fiction story involving time travel and complex scientific principles. I’d love to see a new Spider-Man game focused solely on Miguel O’Hara in the futuristic, high-tech world of 2099, but rumors suggest Insomniac Games is taking the series in a different direction.
Similar to how *Spider-Man: Edge of Time* handled things, it would make more sense if Insomniac presented Spider-Man 2099 through time travel instead of a multiverse storyline. Honestly, I’m getting tired of multiverse stories – comic book movies and shows have relied on them a lot in the last ten years. Often, they feel like an easy way to create stories with pointless alternate realities and without real stakes or consequences.

If I had the final say, I wouldn’t change Insomniac’s *Marvel’s Spider-Man* games. I prefer they stay focused on their own, well-made story and interesting background details, without adding a huge, complicated multiverse.
Even the more fantastical elements in *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2*, like the symbiote invasion and the introduction of Knull, felt out of step with the grounded storytelling the series had established. Leaving Miguel O’Hara in 2099 doesn’t seem like a problem, especially since *Marvel’s Spider-Man 3* is expected to already feature at least three playable characters.
Between Peter, Miles, and Cindy, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is Biting Off More Than It Can Chew

As a huge fan, I’m really hoping we get to play as Peter Parker, Miles Morales, *and* Cindy Moon in the next *Spider-Man* game! It seems pretty likely. And I’m almost certain Mary Jane Watson will be back as a playable character too – Insomniac really focused on giving her a strong story in the first two games, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s important again. I’m also curious about Hailey Cooper. Now that she and Miles are dating, maybe she’ll be playable too, if she’s a bigger part of his life!
The way Marvel’s Spider-Man introduced Cindy – as the daughter of a new love interest for Miles’ mom – strongly suggests she’ll be a playable character in a future game.

Honestly, if they don’t let me *play* as Silk (Cindy) in the new Spider-Man game, I’d be totally shocked. It would feel like a huge waste, especially since they’ve already shown her off! Why even introduce a character like that if she’s just going to be someone I talk to the whole time? I’m expecting a lot of story development for all three playable characters, and a bunch of side stories to wrap up. Unless… is this game actually going to be the *end* of Insomniac’s Spider-Man series? That would be crazy!
- Peter and MJ have moved in together at May’s Queens house, and how their relationship blossoms or is challenged will hopefully be engaging.
- Peter still possesses the Anti-Venom symbiote.
- Miles is in the throes of post-adolescence and about to enroll in university, not unlike the Spider-Verse movies’ Miles. Likewise, Miles meeting Cindy implies that he will become a mentor figure to her when they both learn of each other’s kindred abilities.
- Cindy’s perceived normalcy in the sparing glimpse we have of her suggests that Insomniac has given Cindy a different backstory than the one she has in the comics, and if/how she receives powers will be intriguing.
- Norman Osborn becoming Green Goblin has been brewing since MJ discovered Norman’s secret laboratory and Goblin-related Easter eggs.
- Harry Osborn is ailing from an incurable disease and may well become Green Goblin himself, though Insomniac doubling down on Harry as a villain in back-to-back games would be an odd choice.
- The Chameleon was teased in a side quest’s cliffhanger ending.
- Carnage was teased in a side quest’s cliffhanger ending.
- Yuri Watanabe’s role as Wraith hasn’t been resolved.
- Knull and other symbiotes were teased as part of the main story’s symbiote invasion.
- Marvel’s Spider-Man’s Dr. Otto Octavius is scheming from behind bars and is likely to play a significant role in what comes of Norman.
It’s hard to imagine a worse decision for Insomniac than adding another Spider-Person to the sequel, as it risks making the story overly complicated and losing any sense of focus.
With Harry now involved, I’m really curious to see if Otto will try to hurt him as a way to get back at Norman. On a different note, I’d be thrilled if the next *Marvel’s Spider-Man* game didn’t focus on the multiverse or Spider-Verse again. It seems this Spider-Man series will conclude just as Insomniac starts their X-Men games, and I hope the ending is as good, grounded, and well-done as the first game was.
