As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Insomniac Games has always been a beacon of quality storytelling within the superhero genre. However, when it comes to Marvel’s Spider-Man series, there seems to be a missed opportunity that even Peter Parker himself couldn’t web-swing over – Dr. Curtis Connors’ introduction.
The upcoming game titled “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” has a challenging task ahead, balancing two main characters, an expansive open world filled with content, and the obligation to progress character development and wrap up narrative threads left hanging in the original. It’s worth noting that hints towards the Green Goblin have been dropped in the game, suggesting his potential appearance. However, looking back at earlier references, hints, and teases, it seems that some initial opportunities for world-building in “Marvel’s Spider-Man” may not have been fully exploited, and regrettably, these paths didn’t lead anywhere.
In essence, Peter Parker and Dr. Otto Octavius primarily focus on creating a prosthetic limb throughout their work. This prototype, if successful, could potentially be mass-produced and distributed. The unique aspect of this project is that it’s not common in scientific research. Given Dr. Curtis Connors’ situation (missing an arm), Insomniac Games had the opportunity to incorporate him as a recipient of this prosthetic limb, providing a surprising twist during the main campaign of Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Marvel’s Spider-Man’s Dr. Curtis Connors Should’ve Been Revealed a Whole Game Earlier
In the post-credits scene of Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it seems awkward that Dr. Curtis Connors appears unexpectedly, given that he’d typically be imprisoned or under close supervision after his past actions. However, it’s not entirely implausible to overlook this in the context of a comic book universe.
In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it is shown that characters like Quentin Beck (Mysterio) and Lonnie Lincoln (Tombstone) have undergone reform and are now living peacefully in society again. However, although many of the villains from Marvel’s Spider-Man who were jailed and were expected to join the Sinister Six were present at the ESU Halloween campus event (in costumes, mind you), Dr. Delaney caused chaos on the dance floor as the Lizard. This indicates that Connors might not have been considered a significant threat for quite some time now.
In any case, including Connors as a prosthesis user in Marvel’s Spider-Man game could have provided Insomniac with an opportunity to portray his interactions with Peter, Octavius, and Norman Osborn all within one setting. Notably, depicting a potential recipient as a veteran amputee would have highlighted the altruistic intentions of both Peter and Otto, suggesting that Octavius may have supplied prosthetic limbs for war veterans like Connors, had it not been for Norman’s interference. From a storytelling perspective, this scenario would have added depth to the narrative.
Additionally, the character Lance Corporal James Texidor appears to be modeled after a real individual, lending authentic gravity to his portrayal.
As a devoted Marvel fan, I can’t help but feel that the debut of the Green Goblin’s alter ego, Curt Connors, in “Marvel’s Spider-Man” could have been more impactful earlier on. Instead, he was introduced sporadically as an ally to Norman Osborn in “Miles Morales” and “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2”. These games featured breathtaking Lizard sequences that overshadowed Connors’ human side, leaving him feeling like a secondary character whose primary purpose was to serve as a vessel for his lizard form. I believe both personas could have been equally compelling if given more attention and development.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 Can’t Let Opportunities for Rich Lore and Story Connections Pass It by
The storyline for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 might have been more robust if the character of Connors had been introduced earlier, say in the first game. Luckily, the sequel has paved the way for a variety of potential villains in the series, such as Carnage, Chameleon, and Green Goblin.
To enrich the storyline and make the universe feel more connected, future Marvel games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, Marvel’s Wolverine, and other upcoming titles from Insomniac, should establish links with existing characters early on. If Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 ends up being the final chapter as suggested by Octavius, it could potentially mean that the franchise is coming to an end. This would make any references, Easter eggs, or hints in the game less meaningful if they don’t lead to further developments.
