Marvel's Wolverine Will Likely Follow Spider-Man with a Potential Suit

As a gamer who’s been around since the Sega Genesis days, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia when it comes to Wolverine and his iconic blue and yellow suit. I remember the thrill of controlling him in those old games, feeling like I was right there alongside one of Marvel’s most badass characters.

Despite the Sony and Insomniac data breach in December 2023, there’s still much about Marvel’s Wolverine that remains a mystery. The information leaked about Wolverine doesn’t fully encompass what the final game will offer, including costumes. A video circulating online depicts Logan testing out various costumes in an empty developer room, suggesting that the game draws inspiration from notable Wolverine storylines in comics and movies. However, it appears that these outfits only scratch the surface of what players might eventually see, as Spider-Man and its sequel hint at multiple costume changes for characters, possibly including Deadpool and Wolverine costumes in Marvel’s Wolverine.

Since 2018’s “Marvel’s Spider-Man”, games developed by Insomniac have a history of incorporating famous costumes inspired by the heroes’ appearances in films. For instance, the costumes featured in “Spider-Man” include the suit worn by Andrew Garfield’s version of the character in 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man”, as well as the homemade suit and Iron Spider suit from Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man in the MCU. Following this pattern, “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” and “Spider-Man 2” included several suits from “Into the Spider-Verse”. It’s likely that Insomniac will take advantage of the success of “Deadpool & Wolverine” by adding costumes seen in the film to future games.

Wolverine’s Suit in Deadpool & Wolverine Marks a Major Milestone

Fans have long associated Hugh Jackman with his portrayal of Wolverine in multiple movies, making him synonymous with the live-action depiction of one of Marvel’s most renowned characters. The excitement was palpable when it was announced that Jackman would return to the role after retiring from it post-Logan. The movie Deadpool & Wolverine took this anticipation a step further by debuting Wolverine’s distinctive blue and yellow suit on the big screen for the first time.

Viewing the costume donned by Wolverine’s veteran actor sparked a diverse array of feelings among fans, practically ensuring its presence in Marvel’s Wolverine.

Throughout various games, Wolverine has sported a blue and yellow suit, tracing back to his roles in the Sega Genesis’ X-Men. However, Deadpool & Wolverine signifies the first time the character has worn this costume in a live-action format. Although Insomniac’s Wolverine already sports a blue and yellow costume similar to their designs for Spider-Man characters Peter Parker and Miles Morales, there’s potential for diverse interpretations of the same theme. Additionally, both Deadpool & Wolverine’s and Insomniac’s versions of the suit could be joined by the original John Romita design or Jim Lee’s early 90s makeover in the future.

Deadpool & Wolverine
(2024)

Alongside the introduction of its distinctive blue and yellow outfit, the movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine is packed with Easter eggs that pay homage to their comic book history. A specific scene within the film is a barrage of Easter eggs and references to famous Wolverine comic covers, such as Todd McFarlane’s work on The Incredible Hulk #340 and Adam Kubert’s depiction of the future Wolverine from the Age of Apocalypse storyline. It can be expected that many, if not all, of these iconic versions of Wolverine will likely show up in Marvel’s Wolverine series, not as movie tie-ins but as tributes to the character’s rich comic book history.

Regardless of which costumes Marvel’s Wolverine ultimately ends up including beyond what was leaked late last year, the character’s place in the zeitgeist is as prominent now as it was more than 30 years ago during the early 90s comic industry boom. The return of the blue and yellow suit was an important part of Wolverine and the X-Men’s dominance over comics in the late 80s and early 90s, and its debut in the MCU deserves to be represented in the character’s upcoming game.
