As a longtime gamer and avid X-Men fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating Marvel’s Wolverine since its announcement last year. The prospect of exploring Wolverine’s world in an open-world game, following the success of Insomniac’s Spider-Man, is incredibly exciting. However, the recent leaks suggesting that classic X-Men villains like Mr. Sinister and Jean Grey could make appearances in the game has me even more intrigued.

Due to the excitement generated by Deadpool and Wolverine, the X-Men have become a popular topic once more, leaving fans craving for more X-Men material. Fortunately, there is an abundance of high-quality X-Men content available, including classic comic series spanning decades and newer releases like “X-Men ’97”. However, those looking forward to video game adaptations featuring Wolverine will have to be patient as “Marvel’s Wolverine” has yet to be released.

Since September 2021, when it was announced alongside “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” there has been little news about “Marvel’s Wolverine” from Insomniac Games. However, fans have not been completely left in the dark. Towards the end of last year, Insomniac Games experienced a major hack which led to several of its projects being leaked online. Among these leaks was information about “Marvel’s Wolverine.” It is important to note that leaks should be taken with caution, especially following a data breach such as this one. Nevertheless, there is one reported villain for the game that, if accurate, could establish a well-known X-Men plotline within Insomniac’s Marvel universe.

Marvel’s Wolverine Could Follow a Classic X-Men Comic Arc With its Villain

Marvel’s Wolverine Mr. Sinister Leaks Explained

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel the impact of the Insomniac hack on Marvel’s Wolverine game the most. In the aftermath of the cyber-attack, sensitive information about the game was released online, giving us glimpses into early builds, concept art, and even plot summaries. Among these leaks, a cast list for Marvel’s Wolverine surfaced, revealing the presence of some classic X-Men adversaries, such as Sabretooth, Mystique, and Omega Red. However, one name from the villain roster piqued my curiosity more than others: Mr. Sinister.

Introduced in “The Uncanny X-Men #221” back in 1987, Mr. Sinister, whose real name is Dr. Nathaniel Essex, has been a formidable enemy of the X-Men. This gene-splicing scientist gained superpowers from Apocalypse and is fixated on creating the ideal life-form. His experiments frequently lead to confrontations with the X-Men and their offshoot groups. Mr. Sinister’s abilities include cloning himself and others, as well as having the power of precognition and the ability to transform into different shapes.

Based on the leaked report, it appears that Troy Baker is set to portray Mr. Sinister in “Marvel’s Wolverine.” Notably, this list hints at a significant part for Jean Grey in the series. With Mr. Sinister and Jean Grey involved, there’s a strong possibility of adapting one of the longest-running X-Men comic storylines.

How Marvel’s Wolverine Could Set Up The Goblin Queen Arc

Introduced in 1983, four years before Mr. Sinister’s debut, Madelyne Pryor is initially portrayed as a woman who resembles Jean Grey. Following Grey’s presumed demise, Pryor becomes romantically involved with Scott Summers. However, during the “Inferno” X-Men comic storyline in 1989, it is uncovered that Madelyne Pryor is in fact a clone of Jean Grey created by Mr. Sinister years ago and brought to life by the Phoenix Force. Sinister’s ultimate goal was to have Pryor and Summers produce a child, whom he believed would be the next stage in human evolution.

X-Men ’97
recently adapted the Goblin Queen arc in its first three episodes.

After discovering these shocking truths, Madelyne Pryor experiences a devastating mental collapse. The demon N’astirh then persuades her to join forces and wreak havoc on the world. This partnership transforms Pryor into the infamous Goblin Queen. Despite being defeated by the X-Men and X-Factor, Pryor has resurfaced numerous times in the comics as different adversaries.

In Marvel’s Wolverine, there are speculations that Mr. Sinister and Jean Grey will have significant parts to play. This could potentially pave the way for the inclusion of Madelyne Pryor and the Goblin Queen storyline in the game. Alternatively, these elements may be introduced in Wolverine to build up to a future resolution in Insomniac’s anticipated X-Men project.
