Summary
- Marvel is bringing back older X-Men actors for Avengers: Doomsday, raising concerns about mutants in the MCU.
- X-Men ’97 shows Marvel can mix nostalgia and new ideas successfully, unlike Doomsday’s reliance on old actors.
- Uncertainty looms over the fate of Marvel’s next generation of mutants as classic X-Men actors return.
A large number of viewers tuned in to a continuous live broadcast by Marvel Studios, where they revealed the cast members for the 2026 film “Avengers: Doomsday.” Familiar faces such as Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, and Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier were mentioned, along with some unexpected names like Tenoch Huerta Mejía playing Namor and Channing Tatum taking on the role of Gambit.
As a film enthusiast, I must confess that the unexpected assembly of stars from the original X-Men trilogy has left me utterly astounded. It seems like a floodgate has opened as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and Kelsey Grammer have all been announced to return for the next Avengers adventure! While some fans might be overjoyed to witness these familiar faces don their superhero outfits once more in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this development doesn’t exactly paint a rosy picture for the future of our beloved mutant squad on the big screen.
Marvel Is Bringing Several Older X-Men Back Into The Fold
How Much Nostalgia-Bait Can One Fanbase Handle?
In 2019, when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, they picked up the movie rights to characters like X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. Last year, Deadpool made his appearance in the MCU with the blockbuster hit, Deadpool & Wolverine. This year, we can expect the Fantastic Four to join him in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. However, it hasn’t been a straightforward journey for Marvel’s team of mutants.
In “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Patrick Stewart made an appearance as a variant of Charles Xavier. Meanwhile, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” subtly hinted at Namor being a mutant (although it could be easy to miss this detail). Interestingly, “Ms. Marvel” introduced Kamala Khan as a potential mutant before the comics did, although she had previously associated herself with the Inhumans; however, their popularity has waned recently. At the end of “The Marvels,” Kelsey Grammer’s Beast appeared, and “Deadpool & Wolverine” was jam-packed with mutants like Cassandra Nova, Gambit, X-23, and others, but these characters are not from the main MCU universe. Consequently, fans may not be as excited about them due to their connections to alternate universes.
It appears Marvel Studios is aggressively incorporating mutants from yesteryears into the MCU, building upon the popularity of Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds. The idea seems to be that fans will readily embrace a team of mutants already introduced 25 years ago rather than creating an entirely new one, which might require more effort and genuine work.
X-Men ’97 Proves That Marvel Studios Can Get The Mutants Right
But, You Know, They’d Have To Actually Try…
The frustrating part about this situation is having X-Men ’97 around, as it derives from the 1990s X-Men animated series but still manages to introduce fresh concepts alongside classic mutant stories from the comics. For instance, fans were treated to Gambit charging Wolverine’s claws – isn’t that amazing? Marvel Animation demonstrated that it’s possible to satisfy nostalgia and challenge the norm simultaneously by revisiting familiar elements while adding a twist to the established order.
Instead of rushing through the iconic storylines “Inferno” and “Fatal Attractions,” X-Men ’97 managed to incorporate them effectively into its own narrative flow. Characters, such as Nightcrawler, weren’t merely added for cool factor, but they had significant roles that included engaging scenes like sword fights.
What Does All This Mean For The Next Class Of Marvel Mutants?
Or Are We Just Never Going To Get A Proper X-Men Reboot?
Over time, there have been four farewell gatherings for different X-Men and associated characters. The movie “X-Men: Days of Future Past” served as a goodbye for the original X-Men film cast, altering the timeline in the process. Following this, Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart’s duo got a standalone sendoff in the film “Logan”. The second phase of Fox’s X-Men films ended with the disappointing “Dark Phoenix” in 2019. Lastly, the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine” from 2024 offered closure for numerous Fox-based Marvel characters, featuring a heartfelt montage during the end credits.
Avengers: Doomsday – Contrary to expectations, given that it revolves around a villain from Fantastic Four, this Avengers movie seems poised to serve as another goodbye for the original X-Men cast members. However, with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and Dafne Keen’s X-23 already appearing in the MCU, one might wonder if this is indeed a farewell. Additionally, Channing Tatum’s Gambit and Kelsey Grammer’s Beast are making comebacks after brief appearances in other MCU projects. Could it be that an ensemble of these X-Men, along with those yet to be announced, will form the new main mutant team?
For characters like Namor and Ms. Marvel, this implies that Namor, being an anti-hero/villain, has a dedicated fanbase among ardent Marvel enthusiasts. On the other hand, Ms. Marvel is said to be part of the ongoing speculation surrounding the Champions or Young Avengers team. There have been whispers about a new generation of X-Men for some time, but no definite plans for a fresh X-Men film have been confirmed yet.
It seems Marvel Studios hasn’t revealed much about their plans for the X-Men yet, and to be frank, it appears that they may still be figuring things out themselves.
