Mass Effect 4: Will the Geth Be Heroes or Villains This Time?

There’s a palpable air of enigma surrounding the upcoming Mass Effect, and it seems this sense of mystery will persist for a while longer. The long-anticipated sequel to the Mass Effect series carries significant potential, as the original triology is often hailed as one of the greatest science-fiction franchises ever created, not only in gaming but across various media platforms. Indeed, the world-building of Mass Effect can hold its own against giants like Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica, and a large part of its rich lore is due to its intricate tapestry of diverse alien civilizations.

One fascinating alien species from the Mass Effect game series is the Geth, originally designed as a servile robotic class by the Quarians. After gaining self-awareness and setting personal objectives, the Geth rebelled against their creators to gain freedom, leading to an enduring hostility between them. The Geth’s image wasn’t improved when a faction known as the Heretics allied with Saren and the Reapers during Mass Effect 1. How the Geth Could Show Up In the Next Mass Effect

Option 1: Mass Effect 3’s Destroy Ending

There’s been a lot of discussion about whether Commander Shepard will make an appearance in Mass Effect 4. In the ending of Mass Effect 3 often called “Perfect Destruction,” synthetic life throughout the galaxy is wiped out, including the Geth and the Reapers. This destruction also renders the Mass Effect relays, which enable faster-than-light travel, obsolete.

In essence, it’s unlikely that the Geth will be significant characters again after this ending, but they might still have a part to play. A hint at an early Mass Effect 4 suggests their importance, as a teaser image shows what seems to be a colossal crater shaped like a Geth head, implying their relevance in the next game. Upon closer inspection of this image, a fallen Geth body is visible near the center of the crater. If the Destroy ending becomes official, it’s possible that these Geth bodies could be studied for advancements in technology or artificial intelligence, thus continuing the Geth’s influence without resurrecting them literally.

In the ‘Control’ ending of Mass Effect 3, the more philosophical aspects of the game unfold. Here, Shepard devises a duplicate of their consciousness to substitute the Catalyst, transforming into an omnipotent AI ruling over the Reapers. This is strikingly similar to slavery, as the game suggests, and the Geth might not appreciate it. Given that they no longer align with the Reapers’ views, but still empathize with their synthetic kind, the Geth could emerge in Mass Effect 4 as ideological adversaries of this new system. Based on the player-character’s standpoint, they may either become foes or allies in this future conflict.

Option 3: Mass Effect 3’s Synthesis Ending

Without a doubt, the ending of Mass Effect 3 that leaves many players puzzled is Synthesis. This outcome leads to a merging of all organic and synthetic life forms, giving birth to a new advanced species of cybernetic beings. The finale is subtly unsettling because every living being in the galaxy undergoes an unforeseen and disquieting transformation. It’s challenging to predict how the Geth would react to this, considering the potential consequences on their hive-mind consciousness, which they highly value. This option provides BioWare with more storytelling flexibility but also brings significant changes to the galaxy at its core.
