As a huge fan of Star Wars and open-world games, I couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming release of Star Wars Outlaws from Massive Entertainment. From what we’ve seen so far, it’s clear that this game is going to offer something unique and fresh in the open-world genre.

Last month, fresh gameplay insights into Star Wars Outlaws were unveiled to the public, prompting many fans to dismiss it as just another Ubisoft production. Given Ubisoft’s past criticisms for adhering closely to their open-world template in titles such as Far Cry and Avatar, this assumption seemed reasonable. However, Star Wars Outlaws’ creative director assures us that the game will deviate from this pattern.

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on Outlaws during this year’s Summer Game Fest, and let me tell you, I came away feeling pleasantly surprised. According to our previewer, Cristian Macias, Massive Entertainment has crafted a richly detailed and immersive world that manages to captivate and distinguish itself amidst the sea of open-world games.

Massive Entertainment’s creative director has made it clear that despite being influenced by other Ubisoft titles like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 will offer a unique gaming experience that sets it apart from the rest of the Ubisoft lineup.

In a recent conversation with GamesIndustry.biz, Julian Gerighty revealed that Massive Entertainment maintains a strong awareness of Ubisoft’s distinct development approach. Gerighty explained, “Massive has always held onto its unique identity. The Division and The Division 2 were noteworthy for their differences. Initially, Massive was an autonomous studio, then under Activision, which fostered a separate thought process. However, the core of Massive carries a rare flavor that sets it apart from Ubisoft. Yet, there is much to gain by embracing Ubisoft’s effective methods in game production.”

Gerighty provided an illustration of Outlaws’ unique approach to deviate from Ubisoft’s customary formula. Rather than incorporating a conventional skill tree and upgrade tree, players will encounter experts in the game, establishing mentor-apprentice relationships that will guide them on an exciting journey to advance their character.

“The essence of things, including people and the world, is deeply embedded,” Gerighty explained as he touched upon Outlaws’ distinctiveness.

The release date for Star Wars Outlaws has been set for August 30. This highly anticipated game is coming out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms. Earlier this month, the developers announced that they had reached the “gold master” stage, which significantly reduces the likelihood of any unexpected delays near launch.
