In the new version of Civilization 7, the Trade Routes function differently compared to their operation in earlier Civ games, such as Civ 6. Unlike previous versions where Trader units would autonomously navigate towards a destination and provide ongoing passive benefits, in Civ 7, you’ll need to personally guide your Trader to its destination. Instead of earning Gold and yields over time, you will receive one-time Resource rewards upon arrival at the destination.
To establish Trade Routes in Civ 7, you need to initially unlock the Merchant unit first. This guide on Civ 7 Trade Routes will show you how to acquire Merchants and Traders, as well as demonstrate the steps to set up a Trade Route using this revamped trading system.
How To Unlock & Get Merchants
In Civilization VII (Civ 7), to acquire Merchants or Trader units, you need to conduct research on the Economics Civic. The Economics Civic is positioned roughly in the middle of the Antiquity Civics tree, so it might take a fair amount of time to reach it, even if you prioritize Culture development.
Unlocking Economics in your town or city will allow merchants to appear for production and trade within your settlements, displayed alongside other units at the base of the settlement menu. Simultaneously with researching Economics, you’ll also gain access to unique merchants like the Mandarin Ming Merchant.
Avoid impulsively buying a Merchant in any location; instead, choose locations near other civilizations for your purchases. This way, you can establish Trade Routes more quickly.
How To Create A Trade Route In Civ 7

To establish a Trade Route in Civ 7, you need to maneuver your Trading Representative unit into the boundaries of another player’s tradeable settlement. By selecting the Trading Representative, Civ 7 players will be presented with a list of nearby potential settlements offering resources for acquisition.
To set up a Trade Route, simply guide your Trading Representative to the specified regions and travel there step by step across multiple turns. Once you arrive at the destination settlement, resources will be transferred to your control.
As soon as it’s delivered, head over to the Merchant and locate the “Create Trade Route” option tucked away at the base of their menu. By clicking on it, you’ll magically establish a Trade Route, allowing you to manage the resources from the destination settlement just the way you want!
You cannot establish a Trade Route in your own settlements.
When establishing a Trade Route, a land-based Caravan or an oceanic Trade Ship is automatically generated depending on the route type. These transportation means can be destroyed or seized by opposing armies in times of war or hostile groups. If left uninterrupted, they consistently supply Resources to you and Gold to your allied Leader.
If an adversary’s AI establishes a Trade Network linking one of your settlements, you’ll earn Gold on a regular basis for every resource that reaches its final destination.
