The Shamisen is an instrument Atsu carries with her in Ghost of Yotei, and her mother originally taught her how to play. Because she lost her family at a young age, Atsu wasn’t able to continue her lessons, which is why she initially only knows a single tune. However, this can be changed, as Atsu can eventually learn more songs. She can learn one of these tunes during the Master of the Shamisen quest in Ghost of Yotei, which sends Atsu to Master Heijiro’s Garden located on the Yotei River.
Master of the Shamisen Quest In Ghost of Yotei

To begin the Master of the Shamisen quest in Ghost of Yotei, go to the garden by the Yotei River. You’ll find it north of both Shikotsu Woods and Jade Grove, and right east of Mount Yotei.
How To Complete The Master of the Shamisen Quest In Ghost of Yotei

When you reach Atsu, she’ll start remembering things, but the game doesn’t clearly explain how to finish the Master of the Shamisen quest in Ghost of Yotei. You need to go back and experience Atsu’s past at three different locations. These memories will unfold one after another, so you have to complete them in a specific order.
Your first memory is found close to the house, on the cliff above the bridge below. Go to that location and switch to Atsu’s past. Then, follow her mother’s instructions to finish the memory.

Okay, so next I went down and over the bridge to the gate. I found the second memory hiding near the fence. When I touched it, another flashback played, showing Atsu and her mother. It was a pretty emotional scene, honestly. It really helped me understand their relationship. Finding these memories is key to progressing, I think.
The memory reminds Atsu of the time she and her mother put fish eggs into the pond. Her mother had said the fish would grow up alongside Atsu, and she could enjoy watching them develop together. It was a special moment.
Lastly, after Atsu observes the fish – now much larger since she was a child – a final memory will materialize directly in front of her. Travel to that spot and remember one last time the place where they both planted a young tree together.
When you return to the present, Master Heijiro will be standing behind Atsu. He immediately recognizes the woman who was once a young girl, and realizes they need to complete the lesson they started a long time ago.
Song of Spirit In Ghost of Yotei
Remember when you first learned to play the Shamisen with Atsu’s mother? If you play it like you did then, you’ll eventually learn the Song of Spirit in Ghost of Yotei. This song is different from Atsu’s Song, which is just a melody Atsu plays while traveling. The Song of Spirit actually does something when the main character plays it.
Using the Song of Spirit will create a wind current, guiding Atsu towards the next Bamboo Strikes location. This helps her earn Spirit points at a quicker pace.
