As a devoted fan, I can’t help but sing praises for the legendary challenge that the Ninja Gaiden series is renowned for. The freshly unveiled remake, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, undoubtedly preserves this tradition of toughness. Yet unlike numerous other games that might leave you wincing in pain, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black offers a variety of difficulty settings, one of them being the novel Hero Play Style, serving as a sort of ‘Easy Mode’ alternative. In this guide, I’ll walk you through each and every difficulty option found in Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, highlighting the significant distinctions between them.
All Difficulty Options in Ninja Gaiden 2 Black
Mentioned earlier, the Ninja Gaiden series is renowned for its high challenge levels, a trait deeply ingrained in Team Ninja’s creative process and visible across many of their projects. Thus, it comes as no surprise that when you start up Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, you’ll likely find yourself struggling on the ‘Normal’ difficulty setting.
But ‘Normal’ is only one of NB2 Black‘s four difficulty levels, which are as follows:
- Hero Play Style
- Path of the Acolyte – Normal
- Path of the Warrior – Hard
- Path of the Mentor – Very Hard
- Path of the Master Ninja – Punishing
You can only access the challenging mode after you’ve successfully completed the game at any difficulty setting.
Hero Play Style Explained – NInja Gaiden 2 Black:
As a devoted fan, I found myself diving straight into the Hero Play Style when I started the game’s remake. This freshly crafted challenge level greets players from the get-go, offering minimal guidance in its brief description.
Ultimate power awakens at the moment of death. Follow your instincts and keep fighting.
In the game, you’re given a basic explanation, but for additional details, you need to consult the online manual. It mentions a feature called ‘Hero Play Style,’ which involves a mode known as ‘Hero Mode.’ This mode becomes active when your health bar starts flashing red, an indication that your health is critically low. At this point, the Hero Gauge becomes functional.
The Hero Gauge and Hero Mode enable Ryu to autonomously dodge or shield against enemy assaults. This effect persists until his health is replenished or the Hero Gauge depletes. Moreover, the Hero Play Style lets you use the blue health pick-ups not just for refilling your health, but also for erasing the temporary red portion of your health meter that reduces your maximum health capacity.
Normal Difficulty Explained – Ninja Giaden 2 Black:
“As a dedicated fan, I refer to Ninja Gaiden 2 Black‘s standard difficulty as ‘The Acolyte’s Journey.’ This level is where most players will find themselves immersed, offering a challenge that’s tough enough to be engaging, yet not too daunting for those stepping up from lower difficulty settings.”
The Novice embarks on a journey into the realm of darkness for the first time. Don’t let fear grip you about what’s to come. Maintain your composure, like a skilled martial artist.
For beginners who haven’t played Ninja Gaiden before or are new to this specific game, it’s strongly suggested to opt for the easy difficulty level. Just a reminder that ‘Normal’ mode offers a good challenge but remains very satisfying. In Normal mode, you can only restore the red part of your health bar by using save points and Spiritual Life Grains.
Hard Difficulty Explained – Ninja Gaiden 2 Black
For a more challenging experience, opt for the ‘Way of the Warrior’ difficulty level. If you’re already acquainted with ‘Ninja Gaiden’, you might want to dive right into Hard mode. However, for those who are newcomers, it would be advisable to start on Normal and gradually progress towards harder levels as your skills improve. The game provides this description:
Individuals skilled in combat continually tread the warrior’s journey throughout their lives. For a genuine ninja, each day serves as a step towards confronting mortality.
In Hard mode, the intensity of every significant aspect in combat gets ramped up significantly. The enemies now boast higher health pools and inflict more harm. Their movesets become refined and executing moves at the right moment becomes a lot trickier.
Very Hard Difficulty Explained – Ninja Gaiden 2 Black
This “Very Hard” setting, also known as “The Path of the Mentor,” presents the toughest challenge right from the beginning of the game. The guidebook merely hints at an extremely steep difficulty curve. Here’s how the game puts it:
– From the start of the game, you can select “Very Hard” or “The Path of the Mentor.” This setting is described as having a very high challenge level.
Triumphant on the battlefield, the proficient ninja transitions into a Guide, moving steadily towards the wisdom that lies at the junction of life and death.
Extremely challenging exceeds the challenge presented by the Hard setting by a significant factor. The opponents in this mode are tough in all possible aspects.
Punishing Difficulty Explained – Ninja Gaiden 2 Black
Previously, we noted that accessing the Punishing difficulty level, or the Master Ninja’s Path, can only be attempted after successfully completing the game on any of the lower difficulty settings. As of now, we haven’t unlocked the Punishing mode yet, so we can’t verify its true challenge. However, the manual offers a hint: it’s described as incredibly tough.
Only beatable by the best of the best.
It appears that there isn’t much more to add at the moment. As soon as we activate the mode, we’ll adjust this guide accordingly. For now, it’s reasonable to anticipate that conquering the game on anything less than Very Hard likely won’t adequately prepare you for the horrors in store in Punishing.
