The following article contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super.
In the realm of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Super has brought forth numerous novel transformations, leading a few enthusiasts to express fatigue due to the perceived “endless progression of power”, which diminishes the excitement surrounding power growth for certain individuals.
In my perspective as a keen observer, one intriguing ability showcased in the series is Ultra Instinct – a divine metamorphosis that represents the pinnacle of transformations Goku has ever attained (up until he eventually unlocks another form of extraordinary power in a subsequent arc or narrative). It’s clear that this form holds immense potential, but what hurdles does our protagonist face while mastering it?
What Is Ultra Instinct in Dragon Ball?
Similarly to Ultra Ego, Ultra Instinct represents a state and transformation that are interconnected. In terms of skill or mental state, Ultra Instinct (or Autonomous Ultra Instinct) is an extremely potent technique considered the pinnacle of mind-body synchronization. This means users can effortlessly dodge attacks and respond to threats in near real-time, almost instinctively.
Ultra Instinct, a power utilized by divine beings such as Gods and Angels, gives its user an almost invincible state. However, even with this ability, they can still succumb to foes stronger than them or face “hidden dangers,” like slipping on a banana peel lying around. But beware, for those who master Ultra Instinct may perish if they overindulge in its use – and in this context, overuse means using it for more than one minute. This is due to the fact that their mortal bodies might not endure such immense power for extended periods of time. In essence, Ultra Instinct is like Kaioken, but on a completely unprecedented scale of power.
This here is the power of Ultra Instinct.

In simpler terms, Ultra Instinct (Ultra Instinct Sign) represents a remarkable transformation where a user transcends their own limitations and taps into their untapped potential, gaining divine energy in the process. This divine form allows them to utilize the skill called Autonomous Ultra Instinct.
As a fervent fan, I’m excited to share that mastering the Ultra Instinct form is not just a dream but a possibility! This form empowers mortals to tap into the Ultra Instinct ability themselves. The pinnacle of this form is Perfected Ultra Instinct (also known as Mastered Ultra Instinct), which amplifies the user’s power and lets them harness the Ultra Instinct ability at its full potential. However, using it too frequently can lead to self-inflicted damage.
Why Is Mastering Ultra Instinct Difficult?
Although Goku stumbled upon Perfected Ultra Instinct by chance, mastering this skill is exceptionally tough due to its high energy demand, leading to significant strain. In the Dragon Ball series, forms that Goku acquires often share disadvantages akin to Kaioken, hinting at them being refined iterations of this technique. Moreover, when engaging powerful adversaries, these states can quickly exhaust, as they respond automatically without pauses for rest.
A significant hurdle to overcome is mastering emotional self-control: this change might be triggered by emotional turmoil, but it’s crucial for the user to manage their emotions effectively and maintain a composed state, much like maintaining equilibrium of one’s spirit (and mind). Currently, Goku lacks the ability to initiate this transformation independently; instead, he can only access it when faced with dire circumstances.
Who Can Transform Into Ultra Instinct?

To date, Goku stands as the sole mortal character known to access Ultra Instinct, even though other characters exhibit this ability in some video games. However, angels naturally possess the capability to utilize this state continuously.
It was widely believed that Vegeta would eventually attain this particular form due to prior indications suggesting he could become incredibly powerful, possibly surpassing Beerus or Goku. However, instead of achieving Ultra Instinct, Vegeta has unveiled the Ultra Ego, a divine transformation with distinct differences from Ultra Instinct. It seems that Broly might one day be capable of transforming into Ultra Instinct.
True Ultra Instinct Is A Variant For Saiyans

Goku has developed a new form of Ultra Instinct referred to as Pure Ultra Instinct. Unlike the original form, he can activate this even without maintaining tranquility. Moreover, it’s more natural for him since he can harness his Saiyan characteristics. However, during the Super Hero arc, Goku is shown to be stronger in his Perfected Ultra Instinct compared to Pure Ultra Instinct.
In essence, if Ultra Instinct were to apply to Vegeta, it would resemble his Ultra Ego in some aspects, but there are significant distinctions. Unlike Ultra Ego, where Vegeta gains power by enduring greater harm, this doesn’t occur under any form of Ultra Instinct (on the contrary, the user evades damage).
