Matchday Champions is aiming to be primarily a social activity | Hands-off preview

As a football enthusiast with a heart full of nostalgia for my 1980s Panini sticker album, I am beyond excited about Matchday Champions! With its unique blend of football and gaming, it promises to be an unparalleled experience that resonates deeply with the emotions fuelling both passions. The involvement of legends like Lionel Messi and Alex Putellas adds a touch of authenticity that has me hooked.

Title Day Champion is now available on major mobile platforms, revolutionizing the way people perceive mobile football gaming. But what makes Title Day Champion worth playing? To celebrate its pre-launch and global early access, I attended a webinar featuring Sebastien de Halleux, an industry veteran who joined Matchday’s development team in 2022. Matchday is a company with employees spread across an impressive 22 countries, all working on the innovative, fresh casual football mobile game, Title Day Champion.

Sebastian initially highlighted that football can be seen as a powerful influence, as evidenced by the five billion viewers of the World Cup in 2022 and the three and a half billion people who play video games worldwide today. This suggests there’s some shared ground between these two large audiences. The common element is that both football and video games are driven by emotions. Matchday Champions aspires to be a groundbreaking experience, appealing to an ambitious audience of five billion fans, counting on the fact that their shared passion for football and gaming will attract them to its offerings.

Lionel Messi, eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, and Alex Putellas, multiple Women’s Ballon d’Or champion, are both friends and representatives of the game who have been incorporated into Matchday Champions, a competitive deck-building PvP game as well as various co-ed licensed FIFA teams. Specifically, Messi is involved with this project through his company called Playtime, serving as an investor and ambassador. This is the first time he has invested in such a venture, and he feels that it aligns with his values, particularly those concerning accessibility. The developers have promised a “carefully crafted” gaming experience, where their passion for football is evident.

The Matchday commitment to football authenticity is key. It is a card game, but the developers wanted those cards to be the real deal – so they have tried to get as many actual ballers as they can thanks to the FIFPRO license. The AI-powered game engine enables players to create a “football identity” and build a squad that feels intuitive and a match experience that is based on real world, dynamic stats, as well as a uniquely emotional experience. They want players to own and treasure their cards forever, the same way old timers like me still keep their 1980s Panini sticker albums.

In this game, you oversee a dream team, and the cards you receive determine who joins your roster. You have the freedom to pick from both male and female licensed players. These cards progress as you earn experience points. The game’s statistical system mimics real-world events, with player values increasing if they excel in their professional careers. However, a decline in performance may occur if they suffer injuries. Currently, a Haaland card is significantly more valuable compared to a Solanke one.

The statistics are designed to be straightforward yet offer a satisfying level of complexity for those familiar with advanced football management games. Just as real-life teams need to work together effectively to succeed, so do the cards and their associated players in our game. There are various attributes, such as the “Rising Star” trait that activates when you field five players under 23 years old. Discovering all these traits is part of the fun!

In this game, you engage in matches with both familiar faces and strangers alike, but every contest is player-versus-player (PvP), meaning you’re always going up against a live opponent. The experience mirrors the thrills and tribulations of football, as scoring goals, executing passes skillfully, and conceding them are all part of the game. Building an effective squad and making strategic decisions on the field directly influence the outcome on the “pitch”.

On Matchday Champions, you can enjoy free gameplay at any time. However, there’s an in-game shop and events tied to specific football seasons, as well as occasional off-screen activities on platforms such as Discord. While the game itself is free, its engaging nature might tempt many players to spend some money.

On September 20th, the first Copa Alexia tournament takes place. This event pits Alexia Putellas against Celine Dept, a well-known football personality. Contestants will pick either of these two celebrities and engage in various challenges. Wins contribute points to their chosen star’s team. It resembles the Global Challenges from Pokemon Go, where teams compete against each other. Putellas and Dept are expected to generate plenty of online buzz to attract players and support their preferred idol. For Sebastien, this isn’t just a mobile game; it’s about fostering connections between real-life football and Matchday Champions.

Access to Matchday Champions on a global scale begins on September 20th. However, there’s much more to look forward to, with numerous new features set to roll out over the upcoming months.
