The fourth season of the popular “Critical Role” series commences on October 2, with a surprising change: Brennan Lee Mulligan takes over as the Game Master for the entire run. Previously, Matt Mercer had been in this role; however, he will now switch to playing a character instead, giving way to Mulligan in the forthcoming “Critical Role” season. As of yet, it is undecided whether they will employ the “Dungeons and Dragons” or “Daggerheart” game system for this new campaign.
The final episode of the third season of “Critical Role” aired on February 6, introducing significant alterations to the realm of Exandria. Since then, “Critical Role” has presented various miniseries, one-off events, and live performances; however, details about the commencement of its fourth main campaign have yet to surface.
Brennan Lee Mulligan is GM of Critical Role Campaign 4
Now, “Critical Role” has revealed details about Campaign 4, surprising fans with some unexpected twists. At the Indianapolis live show on August 2, it was announced that Campaign 4 would commence on Thursday, October 2. This new campaign promises to be quite different – one of the major changes being that Brennan Lee Mulligan will be the game master for the entire series, instead of long-time game master Matt Mercer.
Matt Mulligan is recognized for his comedy and improv work with Dropout, particularly the TTRPG actual play series Dimension 20. However, he has also made guest appearances as a DM in Critical Role’s Exandria Unlimited series. Similarly, Mercer has featured on Dimension 20, and will continue to be involved in Campaign 4, although this time as a player, likely alongside the main cast members. Rest assured, Dimension 20 fans, Mulligan recently secured a three-year contract with Dropout, ensuring his continued presence on Dimension 20 concurrently with Critical Role.
For fans of Dimension 20, ya boy *also* just signed a new long-term contract for non-stop new seasons of D20 (just finished up shooting one of my favorite SideQuest seasons of all time and we’re gearing up for TWO brand new Intrepid Hero Seasons!) — — Brennan Lee Mulligan (@brennanleemulligan.bsky.social) 2025-08-02T23:43:23.846Z
There’s still a lot to learn about Campaign 4, as hinted by its teaser trailer. It seems we might be venturing into a fresh narrative and an entirely new realm, possibly diverging from the Bells Hells storyline set in Exandria. Details regarding characters, setting, possible celebrity appearances, and whether they’ll employ Dungeons & Dragons or Critical Role’s Daggerheart tabletop RPG system are yet to be revealed as we approach the launch of the campaign.

Besides the announcement of this particular item, Critical Role also revealed a plethora of thrilling news about Daggerheart during Gen Con. They announced a Homebrew Kit, a “Romantasy” campaign setting frame, a second season for Age of Umbra, and two new campaign settings: one created by Eberron creator Keith Baker, and another by former Dungeons and Dragons directors Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford. To put it simply, this weekend has been fantastic for Critters!
