Fans of Stu Macher have experienced quite a thrilling journey so far. There was some uncertainty about whether Matthew Lillard would feature in the upcoming film, but now it’s official that Lillard will reprise his role as Stu Macher for Scream 7. Many might contend that Stu and his partner-in-crime Billy Loomis (played by Skeet Ulrich) were the most captivating Ghostface killers. They set the stage for everything that followed, and they offered an enjoyable blend of silliness and entertainment.
The news of Lillard’s comeback is exciting for folks who constantly hunt for fresh horror flicks and are obsessed with revisiting timeless, vintage ones. Yet, horror enthusiasts are left pondering: Could Stu still be alive? Could a character like Stu possibly resurface in Scream 7? Even though characters occasionally return from the grave, is it plausible for this to occur in the upcoming sequel?
How Could Stu Macher Be Alive In Scream 7?

Matthew Lillard, the actor known for his amusing and iconic role as Stu Macher in Scream, has stated repeatedly in various interviews that his character didn’t actually perish. In a 2021 conversation with Bloody Disgusting alongside fellow cast member Skeet Ulrich, Lillard expressed this idea.
“Yes! I’m alive! Stu is alive! You need to support me in this.”
Lillard continued:
I’m here, and I have something important to share. Let’s kick off a writing initiative. Let’s draft a petition together.
In the year 2024, as reported by Dread Central, Lillard appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show and declared, “Indeed, Stu is still living.” However, if that’s true, it raises a question: Given that Sidney once attacked Stu with a TV and he received an electric shock, how could Stu possibly be alive today? Additionally, there’s the issue of how Scream 7 will account for Stu surviving for so many years if he was supposed to be dead. As one Reddit user put it:
I wonder what happened to Stu during these past events. Did Sydney know he made it out alive? If he was conscious throughout, I can’t help but ask why he didn’t act sooner?
Despite the fact that many horror enthusiasts find Matthew Lillard’s amusing and eccentric portrayal of Stu Macher to be a fan favorite, it appears that Sidney killed Stu, and it seems impossible to dispute this fact. If Stu had perished off-screen, then perhaps Scream 7 could have ignored this event. However, since the audience witnessed his death, it seems illogical to deny that he didn’t actually die. To date, no Scream character has returned from the dead. When Skeet Ulrich reappeared in Scream (2022), his de-aging was one of the poorest decisions made by the Scream series.
This Reddit user raised a valid question: Given that Sidney, known for her intelligence and resilience who has survived numerous encounters with Ghostface since the initial film, wouldn’t she be aware that Stu is out there somewhere? It seems unlikely that anything could slip past Sidney. Moreover, if Stu were still alive, wouldn’t he return to confront Sidney, as he might want to honor his friend Billy and complete the mission they started together, which was initially Billy’s idea.
In the Scream universe, if Stu were still alive, wouldn’t it be unusual for him not to appear in another film? Given that both Stu and Roman Bridger (Scott Foley) are coming back, it seems plausible that Sidney might hallucinate them or they could appear together in a flashback. It would come as quite a surprise if Scream 7 were to reveal that Stu had been okay all along. This could potentially take away from the overall flow of the movie.
Scream 6 Explained That Stu Macher Is Dead

In “Scream 6”, fan-favorite characters Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) and Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) have a humorous exchange about their passion for horror films. Kirby points at the TV that Sidney Prescott once hurled at Stu Macher, quipping, “This is the TV that offed Stu Macher.” Mindy then alludes to fan theories surrounding Stu’s fate and says, “If you think he’s truly deceased.” Later on in “Scream 6”, Kirby utilizes a TV set to dispatch one of the film’s three Ghostfaces, Ethan Landry (Jack Champion), and remarks, “I saw that trick in a frightening flick before.
If the scene in Scream 6 hadn’t taken place, it would have been a stretch to think that Stu was still alive. However, with this scene happening, it appears that there is no conceivable explanation for Stu’s demise. Fingers crossed that Matthew Lillard’s return in Scream 7 will be logical and satisfying for fans.
