Summary
- Beetlejuice 3 development status uncertain after Tim Burton and Jenna Ortega seemed unaware in recent interviews.
- Sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was a hit, grossing $451 million, but potential third film may not have original key players.
- Fans disappointed by possible lack of involvement from Burton and Ortega in Beetlejuice 3, as project’s status remains unclear.
The “Beetlejuice” franchise has proven timeless, with the initial movie remaining a popular topic in conversations even now. Furthermore, the 2024 release of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” demonstrated that the characters continue to captivate contemporary audiences, as it was well-received at the box office.
Enthusiasm ran high among fans when it emerged that work on Beetlejuice 3 had already started, as confirmed by producer Mike De Luca. Yet, it seems that the production of Beetlejuice 3, despite its popularity and potential advantages for Warner Bros., may not be straightforward after all.
It was thought that a third “Beetlejuice” movie was in development, but during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tim Burton unexpectedly stated, “Gee, I wasn’t informed. Maybe they found someone else to take over.” This comment seems to contradict the idea. Jenna Ortega, who is part of the 2024 sequel cast as character Astrid, further added fuel to this speculation by saying, “Perhaps I’ve been replaced too. Perhaps [Astrid] dies and goes to heaven instead [of the film’s underworld]. They should just tour Baby Beetlejuice around and send him to Hawaii.
BURTON: It’ll be 35 years since we made the second one by then, which means I’d be 105. That’s not very likely, I know. Still, creating this film was an absolute pleasure, despite Warner Bros.’ initial reluctance. We approached it much like the first one, with improvisation from the actors. It was a joy to bring back some of the original cast and work with Jenna. However, it’s almost like trying to recreate the iconic dance scene from Wednesday. I adore these characters, but I’m not entirely convinced about its necessity.
BURTON: No, I’m quite protective over everything I create, regardless of who owns the characters. When they produced the Beetlejuice Broadway musical, it really upset me.
And Jenna, if they said, “We want Beetlejuice 3, but Tim is not directing it …“
Oh, I absolutely wouldn’t support it. In fact, I believe anyone making such a move would be off the mark. Without Tim at the helm, what would it even be? It’s unique because of Tim and there’s simply no other movie like Beetlejuice. So, why risk being disrespectful by trying to replicate that?
It’s clear that many people would have been let down by recent remarks from Burton and Ortega, considering the immense popularity of the movie “Beetlejuice.” The highly anticipated sequel broke records, earning $111 million in its September opening weekend in the U.S., and an additional $147.2 million during its first week. In total, it grossed $451 million globally, demonstrating that modern audiences continue to be intrigued by this property. Given these impressive figures, it’s easy to understand why Warner Bros. decided to develop a third film.
It seems neither Tim Burton nor Winona Ryder (Ortega) have definitively signed on for Beetlejuice 3, contrary to rumors suggesting development is ongoing. Warner Bros. had been waiting for Burton’s approval before moving forward with the sequel, making his non-involvement unexpected. Similarly, given her significant role in the original and her flourishing career, it seems unlikely Ryder wouldn’t be included – unless, of course, a bigger surprise is being saved for when the official announcement is made.
It appears that despite earlier reports, Beetlejuice 3 does not seem to be in active development at the moment. This might be disheartening news for fans who were eagerly anticipating a follow-up to the original film, given how much they enjoyed Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. However, it’s crucial that if Tim Burton and Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice) aren’t deeply invested in the project, fans might not want to see a third installment of the franchise. After all, it’s essential for the film’s success that Burton feels enthusiastic about creating another movie. If Warner Bros. proceeds without them, there’s a chance fans could wait another 35 years before seeing another Beetlejuice film.
