As a lifelong Pokémon enthusiast who grew up collecting every single Happy Meal toy and trading card, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia as I see McDonald’s Japan announcing their latest collaboration with my beloved franchise. The new series of toys based on Pokemon Horizons: The Series looks absolutely fantastic, featuring some of the most adorable designs yet – from Captain Pikachu to Sprigatito and Fuecoco!

McDonald’s is partnering with Pokémon again for a fresh Happy Meal promotion inspired by “Pokémon Horizons: The Series”. This new season of the popular anime series debuted in Japan in April and made its way to Netflix USA in March. In this series, the focus moves from the long-standing protagonist Ash Ketchum to new leads named Liko and Roy, who journey through the region of Paldea, meeting the numerous Pokémon creatures that were introduced in 2022’s games “Pokémon Scarlet” and “Pokémon Violet”.

Given that the latest Pokemon show has been running for some time now, speculation among fans arises whether McDonald’s is planning a new promotion for their Happy Meal to commemorate its achievement. Previous collaborations between Pokemon and Happy Meals have included exclusive toys or limited-edition trading cards. For example, a festival-themed toy set was offered in Japan last August, while another event in September showcased Pikachu and the starters from Scarlet and Violet.

McDonald’s is collaborating with Pokemon again in Japan, as shown in videos on their YouTube channel (announced via CBR). This partnership will occur in two phases, showcasing a limited collection of toys inspired by the series “Pokemon Horizons.” The initial phase, from August 8 to August 15, will offer customers a spinning waterwheel themed after Captain Pikachu, a watering can shaped like a Poke Ball with a Terrapagos topper, a shovel modeled after Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Grass-type starter Sprigatito, and a small frisbee featuring Fuecoco.

Pokemon Happy Meal August 2024 Lineup

Wave 1 (August 8-15)

  • Captain Pikachu’s Spinning Waterwheel
  • Terrapagos’ Poké Ball Watering Can
  • Sprigatito’s Shovel Set
  • Fuecoco’s Frisbee

Wave 2 (August 16-22)

  • Quaxly’s Water Gun
  • Captain Pikachu’s Roller
  • Sprigatito’s Telescope
  • A Poké Ball Compass (feat. Fuecoco, Captain Pikachu, Quaxly, and Sprigatito)

In the upcoming period from August 16 to 22, the second series of Pokemon Happy Meals will arrive, featuring four unique toys: a water-spraying plastic figure of Quaxly, a Captain Pikachu-themed roller, a Sprigatito-designed telescope toy, and a Poke Ball compass adorned with the images of Fuecoco, Captain Pikachu, Quaxly, and Sprigatito. Following this, from August 23, a third and concluding wave of Pokemon Happy Meals will begin, aiming to clear all remaining toys from the previous couple of weeks from each store’s inventory.

It remains uncertain whether the latest Pokemon Happy Meal toys will be available internationally, but McDonald’s is continuing its trend of promoting video games. In the past, the chain has released limited edition Kirby plushies in Japan, and other regions have received MultiVersus tins and puzzles.
