On August 21st, McDonald’s temporarily lost control of their Instagram account due to a hack, during which a cryptocurrency scammer took over and changed the bio, posting two unusual videos promoting a fake Grimace crypto coin. According to Twitter user @unusual_whales, this hacker managed to swindle approximately $700,000 from followers through Solana, a platform for cryptocurrency transactions. It’s important to note that the Grimace crypto coin was not endorsed by McDonald’s. The unfortunate timing of this scam coincides with the release of McDonald’s latest Collector Cups, which prominently feature Grimace as one of their characters.

Given McDonald’s massive Instagram following of over five million users, it seems many may have been ensnared by the Grimace coin swindle. It’s important to note that this isn’t an isolated incident; in 2022, the highly popular NFT collection Bored Ape Yatch Club also experienced a cyberattack similar to this one. The hacker exploited the platform by posting a phishing link on their Instagram page, and users who interacted with it unwittingly lost their NFTs.”
