McDonald's Japan Has a New Mascot

As a die-hard fan of both anime and fast food, I must say that the new McDonald’s mascot in Japan, Imadakedabuchitabemi, has truly stolen my heart! Her unique anime style and adorable hamster sidekick are just too cute to resist. And let’s not forget about those limited-time dabuchi items she’s promoting – spicy kara or garlic onions? I can’t decide!

McDonald’s restaurants in Japan have introduced a new character endorsing temporary food offerings, and she stands out significantly from the iconic red-and-yellow-clad clown the brand is commonly associated with. The fresh character, named Imadakedabuchitabemi, is designed and animated using anime art techniques, and her name incorporates elements of dabuchi, the term used for double cheeseburgers that are currently available at McDonald’s outlets in Japan.

In Western countries, it’s not surprising to see anime-style characters in McDonald’s marketing, as demonstrated by their September collaboration with the game “Genshin Impact.” The partnership offered limited-time boxes featuring Kaedehara Kazuha and Beidou, characters from the action RPG, for their popular apple pie dessert items. This collaboration not only provided fans with exclusive real-world food items related to the game, but also granted them codes for in-game exclusives. Unlike these characters, Imadakedabuchitabemi was specifically designed to boost cheeseburger sales.

McDonald’s Japan has introduced two temporary dabuchi menu options, one with spicy kara and another with garlic onions, since October 23. The character Imadakedabuchitabemi, who wears a distinctive McDonald’s cap and jacket, and sports messy pigtails, has been showcasing these items in ads and online posts. She is usually joined by an adorable hamster in headphones, assisting her with promotions. Her name, though lengthy, can be roughly translated to a playful phrase encouraging customers to sample the limited-time double cheeseburger offerings while also alluding to her as a charming woman. Similar to the transient dabuchi menu items, Imadakedabuchitabemi is designed to serve as McDonald’s temporary mascot.

Japan Introduces New Anime-Style McDonald’s Mascot

Despite Imadakedabuchitabemi’s brief appearance, she hasn’t fully taken over from Ronald McDonald, who is long associated with Japan’s McDonald’s. The jovial clown appeared in 1963 and has had less prominence in the chain’s western advertising recently, due to the unsettling clown incidents of 2016 and concerns raised by medical experts about using a clown to entice children towards unhealthy eating. However, Ronald McDonald’s charitable foundation continues to operate, offering housing for hospitalized kids worldwide in 64 countries. In Japan, they still use Donald McDonald, a character resembling Ronald, to market their food products.

In Japan, it’s not just Grimace who is garnering attention as McDonald’s mascot. The blueberry yogurt version of the milkshake featuring the big purple creature is set to debut in their restaurants starting October 30th. Recently, Grimace has been popping up on their Japanese social media platforms.
