11 Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 87%
- Director: Peyton Reed
- Release Date: 2 August 2018
As a huge fan, I can tell you that even though I’m under house arrest, Scott Lang and I join forces with Hope van Dyne to bring Ant-Man and The Wasp into action. It’s an intriguing dance of cat and mouse as I strive to maintain my role as a devoted father and a successful superhero. My mission: uncover the secrets that could unlock even more wonders of Hank Pym’s Quantum realm.
The film “Ant-Man and The Wasp” offers more of the familiar formula, which isn’t necessarily bad, but the excitement level could have been raised with more intriguing antagonists and compelling reasons for the storyline to progress beyond just being funny. The characters still have great chemistry, but there’s a noticeable absence of engaging villains and strong motivations.
10 Captain Marvel (2019)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 79%
- Directors: Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck
- Release Date: 8 March 2019
In an exciting new turn for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans are introduced to the strong-willed and mighty Carol Danvers, who becomes the first solo female superhero in a Marvel film. With extraordinary powers among the universe’s elite, Captain Marvel uses her abilities to protect and aid less fortunate planets. In an unexpected alliance, she teams up with an old friend, reconnecting with a familiar face from the past.
It’s enjoyable to see the dynamic between Carol Danvers and Nick Fury in “Captain Marvel.” A trip back to the 1980s adds a nostalgic touch. The film doesn’t require much persuasion to watch, and although it may seem predictable and lighthearted with amusing moments, it adds valuable potential to the MCU.
9 Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 91%
- Director: Jon Watts
- Release Date: 2 July 2019
In the finale of Phase Three’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” we follow Peter Parker as he readjusts to life in New York City following Thanos’ devastating snap. With Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, no longer around to guide him, Peter assumes the mantle of responsibility on his own. He teams up with Nick Fury and an enigmatic supposed multiverse hero named Mysterio to combat elemental creatures that emerge during their European tour.
In simpler terms, the Spider-Man films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe don’t live up to expectations, as the iconic character seems to need the help of other well-known MCU heroes to shine. While there are enjoyable aspects in “Far From Home,” it fails to establish a clear identity for Spider-Man and instead leans too heavily on Iron Man, which becomes monotonous rather than intriguing.
8 Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 93%
- Director: Taika Waititi
- Release Date: 24 October 2017
In an exciting new transformation, Thor faces unfamiliar challenges in his third solo film as the ominous Hela, the goddess of death, looms over Asgard and its inhabitants, including Thor and Loki. Deprived of his guiding father and the mighty Mjolnir, Thor must devise a plan to break free from a gladiator realm and safeguard Asgard. He embarks on this perilous journey with the Avengers’ most formidable ally by his side.
As a gamer, I’d say that in “Thor: Ragnarok,” the creators took an intriguing gamble by modernizing Thor’s character, but unfortunately, they seemed to tone down the depth of his Shakespearean complexity for more comedic moments. Don’t get me wrong, Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of Thor was spot-on and his banter with Mark Ruffalo as Hulk was undeniably entertaining. However, the absence of gravity in “Ragnarok” left me craving a more emotionally resonant experience. Despite its visual brilliance and wit, it felt like watching an amusing spectacle rather than a heartfelt epic.
7 Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 92%
- Director: Jon Watts
- Release Date: 5 July 2017
In a new collaboration between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, Spider-Man joins the MCU with a warm welcome. This latest installment serves as a reboot of the character, showcasing a younger version of Peter Parker in high school. Balancing the demands of adolescence, including preparing for prom, he also strives to earn Iron Man’s respect. Meanwhile, The Vulture emerges as a new criminal mastermind, peddling advanced alien technology on the black market.
Homecoming” is an engaging introduction to this Spider-Man series as it skips the usual origin story and lets us dive right into Peter Parker’s world. He faces the challenge of juggling duties and powers at a young age while being mentored by Tony Stark. Although Tony’s role is significant, the movie conveys an important lesson that got overlooked in the sequel – the technology from Stark is not what truly makes Spider-Man exceptional.
6 Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 90%
- Directors: Anthony Russo and Joe Russo
- Release Date: 26 April 2016
Governments worldwide conclude that superheroes require accountability for their interventions and extraordinary abilities, resulting in the establishment of the Sokovia Accords. These accords aim to regulate and record individuals with superhuman powers. This decision creates tension among MCU’s legendary heroes, with Captain America and Iron Man at the forefront of opposing factions. The former advocates for abolishing the Sokovia Accords in pursuit of individual freedom and justice, while the latter supports government oversight.
The distinction between Captain America and Iron Man is intriguing and nearly turns “Avengers” into a film with a new title. The arrival of Black Panther and Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is legendary, and the dynamics of previously known characters will be forever altered. Although “Civil War” doesn’t reach the peak intensity of its political thriller forerunner, it effectively demonstrates the consequences when heroes clash.
5 Black Panther (2018)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 96%
- Director: Ryan Coogler
- Release Date: 12 February 2018
In the MCU’s intriguing universe, Wakanda’s hidden world comes alive for viewers, revealing its rich and captivating culture. After T’Challa’s father passes away, he goes back to Wakanda to assume the throne and become the Black Panther, defending his land and loved ones against potential perils.
Black Panther is commendable for its dedication in bringing the fictitious Wakandan culture to life so vividly. The acting from the cast is exceptional, and Michael B. Jordan’s portrayal of Erik Killmonger as a noteworthy villain adds depth that the MCU has yet to surpass.
4 Doctor Strange (2016)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89%
- Director: Scott Derrickson
- Release Date: 24 October 2016
Famous neurosurgeon Stephen Strange experiences a tragic accident resulting in the loss of use of his hands. His quest to restore his previous life leads him to the enigmatic Ancient One, who teaches him to heal physically, mentally, and spiritually through the mystical arts. Consequently, Strange transforms into a powerful sorcerer.
As a longtime fan of comic books and movies, I have seen my fair share of superhero origin stories. But none have quite captured my imagination like Doctor Strange. This mystic voyage is unlike anything I’ve experienced before in the world of comic book films. The visuals are trippy and fun, taking viewers on a rollercoaster ride through alternate dimensions.
3 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 85%
- Director: James Gunn
- Release Date: 28 April 2017
The Guardians of the Galaxy are gaining a reputation as hired heroes, and as their fame increases, so does their connection with each other. However, their teamwork is put to the severe test when a man declares himself to be Peter Quill’s father. It doesn’t take long before Peter and his companions uncover alarming facts about Ego. Meanwhile, a group of Ravagers tries to stage a rebellion against Yondu.
In the sequel to “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Vol. 2, filmmaker James Gunn unfolds his unique cosmic tale within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) unencumbered. The cinematography is stunning, and characters exhibit enhanced depth through expressive performances. The primary and secondary storylines harmoniously intertwine, ensuring every significant character is engaged with compelling actions and heartfelt emotions.
2 Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 85%
- Directors: Anthony Russo and Joe Russo
- Release Date: 26 April 2018
The Avengers need to reunite with great urgency to prevent both the world and the universe from being destroyed. The menace of Thanos and the Infinity Stones grows increasingly imminent, and the Mad Titan’s strategies will put various Avengers teams through their paces as they prepare for their most significant battle yet, proving themselves once again as Earth’s strongest defenders.
In the thrilling saga of Avengers: Infinity War, the film skillfully handles the emotional depth required for such a grand production. It delivers intense emotions, gripping actions, crowd-pleasing scenes, and side-splitting humor. With its explorations of harmony as a central theme, Infinity War effectively switches between the various Avengers teams. This allows characters to engage in meaningful conversations and interactions with those unique to their team, yet recognizable to viewers. Avengers: Infinity War represents an impressive addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, leading up to the repercussions of its continuation.
1 Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 94%
- Directors: Anthony Russo and Joe Russo
- Release Date: 25 April 2019
The universe has experienced irreplaceable loss with Thanos’ triumph, resulting in the destruction of half of all existence. This devastating act of genocide left an infinite sorrow that no gratitude could ever cover. Five long years later, the remaining Avengers united in their determination to seek vengeance for those who perished. They delved into the multiverse via the Quantum Realm to restore balance and bring hope back to the universe.
Endgame is like attending the grand farewell party for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It’s a heartfelt reunion with beloved characters from the past ten years, all coming together to mark the end of an amazing journey. There are touching moments, satisfying resolutions, and an epic showdown that leaves you feeling triumphant and pleasantly surprised. Despite its lengthy runtime and talkative scenes, Avengers: Endgame beautifully encapsulates a decade of interconnected storytelling, pays homage to devoted fans, and highlights the depth and richness of the MCU’s characters.
