MechWarrior 5: Clans review

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I found myself straddling the line between fascination and frustration with MechWarrior 5: Clans. Coming from a background of playing everything from Asteroids to Cyberpunk 2077, I wasn’t fully versed in the rich lore of this franchise, but the sheer scale and spectacle of the game had me hooked.

MechWarrior 5: Clans kind of had me on the back foot from the off. Not being a longstanding fan of the series (I played Mercenaries a few years ago), I didn’t go in with a tacit understanding of who anybody is or why they’re shooting each other in giant mechs. And to be honest, shooting anything in a giant mech is usually all the context I need. But Clans goes to great pains to bring its world to life, with lofty speeches given in cavernous hangars in the shadow of colossal fighting machines. It has its own language that hints at decades of history and conflict, as outcast clans of humans battle against those who cast them out. It’s a lot to take in for the uninitiated.

If the plot seems confusing to you, it’s likely because it assumes prior knowledge. Even though there have been numerous games and spin-offs, a brief recap or “previously on…” sequence would be helpful. What I can gather is that humanity has advanced technologically to engage in planetary wars with massive robots and armies, yet socially has devolved to a tribal-like structure. You assume the role of Kit Jayden, not your name but a rank within Clan Smoke Jaguar, who are appointed Star Commander of a team of five MechWarriors. Immediately, you’re tasked with working for the higher echelons of your clan.

In essence, what truly counts is the combat between mechanical giants, a feature that diehard fans and connoisseurs will likely customize to the classic control scheme, providing a tactile, tank-like experience where each mech part can be controlled separately, giving a more authentic pilot sensation. For those who prefer a more contemporary approach, there’s a modern setting, making gameplay reminiscent of regular first or third person shooters based on your preferred viewpoint. The missions are structured as engagements with multiple objectives, often framed by top-notch cinematics.

But here’s where my biggest issue with MechWarrior 5: Clans lies. The cutscenes may look lovely, but they don’t always run well. In fact, the game itself has performance issues. And while my PC isn’t top of the range, I’ve run games like Wukong this year with zero issues. In MechWarrior 5 I struggled to find a smooth setup, suffering texture pop, slowdown, dropped frames and stuttering. Even on the lowest settings it wouldn’t run smoothly, and the more action-intensive cutscenes just completely crapped out, skipping and pausing throughout. This extended to the gameplay, which just wasn’t a smooth experience.

It appears that a considerable amount of effort was invested in the animation of the cutscenes, lip-syncing that borders on the unnerving, and exaggerated use of eyebrows – resources that might have been better utilized to address some issues elsewhere in the project.

Regarding the gameplay, it’s functional, though it might not blow fans away. The gunplay is decent and the action of piloting your mech and utilizing its extensive weaponry is enjoyable, but performance issues crop up frequently. Additionally, the narrative has some confusing direction with significant events taking place off-screen and a good deal of dialogue during missions that can be easily missed amidst trying to focus on gameplay.

Customizing mechs is a significant aspect of the game, offering a variety of weapons, modules, and cosmetic options to personalize your mech. You can unlock an abundance of weapons, modify appearance through paint jobs, decals, or change parts for functional improvements such as speed enhancement, reduced weapon cooldown, increased ammo count, and boosted survivability. The game features multiple mech archetypes with distinct stats and default loadouts, enabling you to create your preferred mech setup effortlessly. Moreover, the diversity in builds allows for flexibility during combat, since you can quickly take control of teammates in intense battles, providing numerous strategies for engaging in a fight.

Regardless of occasional glitches and difficulty following certain names, I found myself quite enjoying MechWarrior 5: Clans. This suggests that Piranha Games have poured a significant amount of dedication and craftsmanship into this game. Although not everything functions flawlessly and it seems to favor its devoted fanbase, MechWarrior 5: Clans remains an enjoyable mech shooter with plenty of customization options and impressive set pieces.
