As a seasoned game developer with years of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of characters and storylines. But none have left quite the impact that Nor and Enki from Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn have on me.

As a huge fan of intricately designed action RPGs, I’m thrilled about Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, the latest masterpiece from A44 Games. While they gained recognition with their 2018 release, Ashen, which was a more conventional Soulslike, this new game takes things up a notch.

In “Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn,” the story hinges on a devastating incident where the magical boundary separating realms, named the Door to the Great Below, gets shattered. The narrative centers around Nor Vanek, the protagonist, who is accompanied by Enki, an animal-like deity and companion. Daniel Baider, our lead narrative designer, shared insights on developing and incorporating Enki into “Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn” during a Game Rant Advance interview. Enki’s Mythological Roots and Design

A: In what ways might the fictional character named Enki resemble the Mesopotamian god of the same name?

As a gamer: When it comes to the ancient Mesopotamian deity Enki, there’s quite a variation in how he’s portrayed throughout different myths and time periods. In my game, Flintlock, we’ve crafted an original take on this godly figure. Although our Enki doesn’t directly mirror any specific myth, he does inherit some compassionate aspects from various depictions of Mesopotamian Enki, making him a friend to humanity in our storyline.

A: Could you please share some insights into how I went about conceptualizing Enki’s look? To what extent has his form evolved during the design process?

From the outset, Enki exhibited characteristics resembling a fox. However, elements drawn from other animals, like monkey-like paws and feathers, were incorporated later to enhance his exotic and unusual look. The introduction of iridescent feathers instead of regular fur further distinguished him as a divine being, setting him apart from the common creatures in the world.

Q: Could you explain the lore behind Enki’s magic portals?

As a devoted gamer, I can tell you that in the mystical land of Flintlock, the deities, including Enki, are the originators of all magic. When it comes to Enki’s unique talents, he’s got some nifty tricks up his sleeve. He can transport himself short distances and, more intriguingly, he can afflict his adversaries by revealing their hidden vulnerabilities through curses. The world is filled with these anomalies – portals, or as we call them, “Rifts” – which are fractures in the fundamental structure of the Great Below caused by the Gods’ meddling in realms they shouldn’t be in.

These deities grant Enki and other gods the ability to momentarily tap into the enchanting powers of the Great Below for traversal through obstructed territories in the game. In simpler terms, they enable players to swiftly navigate the environment or ascend to previously unreachable heights, revealing shortcuts and hidden paths for acquiring equipment or resources.

Enki’s Role in Flintlock’s Story, Gameplay, and Relationship with Nor

Q: How drastically does the relationship between Enki and Nor change over the game?

As a gamer, I can’t help but be drawn to the intricate dynamic between Baider and Enki in this game. Their connection is what makes my heart race and keeps me coming back for more. At first, they were lone wolves, relying only on themselves. But as events unfolded, they found themselves in situations where trust became essential. The more they leaned on each other, the more complicated their relationship grew. It’s a rollercoaster ride of emotions that I can’t wait to experience.

To fully appreciate Nor and Enki’s connection, players are strongly advised to investigate hidden corners of the world and complete additional missions. Some intriguing interactions between these characters during the discovery of new places or resolution of specific challenges can significantly enrich their personalities.

Q: On his own, what does Enki add to the story and lore of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn?

In “Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn,” Enki has encountered various facets of the game’s world that Nor hasn’t, making conversations between them valuable insights for players as they advance in the game. Many of these discussions occur while exploring the environment, providing an engaging and educational experience to pause and listen to their exchanges, thereby enhancing understanding of the game’s lore and history.

Through Enki’s perspective, players will have the opportunity to discover the other gods as complex characters rather than merely confronting them as adversaries in boss fights. This addition could provide players with a deeper understanding of the gods’ reasons for their actions beyond being simple antagonists.

A: In addition to melee and gunfights, Enki brings an extra dimension to battles at what point in the game was this determined? And, what unique contributions does Enki make to gameplay that other mechanics might not be able to achieve?

In “Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn,” Enki played a crucial role during the game’s development. To help players develop a strong connection with this character, it was essential that they encounter similar difficulties together. From a gameplay perspective, Enki acted as the provider of magical powers for the player, contrasting Nor’s gunpowder and related abilities.

In this action RPG with Souls-inspired difficulties, allowing players to counter tough challenges was essential. Enki’s magical abilities, especially his Witherings, effectively provide this solution. Players can improve Enki’s powers through a skill tree, and they will unlock new Witherings and discover uncommon Cursed Stones that expand the range of available options for both Enki and the player.

Can You Pet the God?

Q: Most important question: can we actually pet Enki?

Enki, being a god, doesn’t have a specific button for being patted in the game. It’s unlikely that he would voluntarily submit to such an action. As for whether it occurs in the game, even gods can’t foresee the future.

A: In a playful vein, how is the Enki account adjusting to social media platforms, specifically Twitter, and what can we find there?

Gamer Me: After getting used to it, Enki no longer takes everything on Twitter at face value and now feels comfortable using the platform. His feed is filled with messages that boost his ego, reminding him he’s the true star of Flintlock.
