Meet Hondo Ohnaka: The Greedy Pirate of Star Wars

The 2025 edition of Star Wars Celebration kicked off in Japan on April 18, and the event has started to reveal news concerning several upcoming and classic video games, including Ubisoft’s Star Wars: Outlaws. On Thursday, May 15, regular players and season pass holders of Star Wars: Outlaws will be able to obtain its second story pack, titled A Pirate’s Fortune expansion. In this expansion, players will take on the role of thief Kay Vess, along with her partners Nix and ND-5, as they search for treasure within the Khepi Tomb while encountering the unpredictable Stinger Tash and her Rokana Raiders. Nevertheless, the Trailblazer crew won’t pursue this treasure without help, as they will receive assistance from the legendary but often untrustworthy pirate Captain Hondo Ohnaka.

The Greedy History of Captain Hondo Ohnaka Explained

For those Star Wars enthusiasts who mainly watch the movies and dabble in a few games, Hondo Ohnaka might appear as yet another fresh, unimportant alien carving out a reputation in the galaxy. However, this Weequay pirate is actually one of the most frequently recurring side characters in Star Wars lore, having made appearances across various Star Wars TV shows, books, comics, and even at Galaxy’s Edge in Disney World and Disneyland. Hondo Ohnaka was first introduced in 2009 during Season 1 episodes “Dooku Captured” and “The Gungan General” of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Here, he was depicted as the leader of a sizable pirate crew on the planet Florrum, primarily dealing in illicit spice and black market weapons.

In the initial appearances of Ohnaka, he successfully deceived and imprisoned not only Count Dooku, but also Jedi Masters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, with the intention of ransoming them to the Galactic Republic. However, the ransom plan was thwarted by the unpredictable actions of Jar Jar Binks. Despite this setback, Ohnaka continued to feature in various story arcs of The Clone Wars, aiming to make a profit from whatever opportunities presented themselves. Over time, he developed friendships with Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Jedi padawan Katooni. It was also revealed that Ohnaka had strong connections with Jango Fett and Aurra Sing, and even managed to repel attacks from the Sith Maul and Savage Opress, as well as General Grievous. However, it was ultimately General Grievous who destroyed Ohnaka’s original pirate enterprise.

Hondo Ohnaka’s Appearances Beyond The Clone Wars

Ohnaka, with his captivating humor, swiftly gained immense popularity among fans and staff at Lucasfilm during his time in The Clone Wars. This widespread adoration led to Ohnaka being one of the select characters from the series who reappeared in Star Wars Rebels, where he consistently strived to establish a new pirate gang, eventually forming a strong bond with the Jedi padawan, Ezra Bridger. This friendship even extended to helping Ezra liberate his home planet Lothal from Imperial rule. Following his role in Rebels, Ohnaka continued to appear in various Star Wars productions such as shows, books, comics, and games, including:

Hondo Ohnaka’s Potential Endgame in Star Wars Outlaws

In the timeline of “Star Wars Outlaws”, Hondo Ohnaka had been struggling for nearly two decades prior. The Galactic Civil War provided an opportunity for him to flourish in criminal activities since the Empire was occupied with the Rebel Alliance. However, he never managed to fully reclaim his original status as a formidable pirate captain. Instead, around 4 ABY, he established Ohnaka Transport Solutions, offering transport and cargo services to various entities, including criminal groups, legitimate businesses, and military organizations. This venture often served dual purposes: filling his own coffers and covertly backing the Rebel Alliance. Since “Star Wars Outlaws” is set around 3 ABY, a story like “A Pirate’s Fortune” could depict Ohnaka’s motivation for starting Ohnaka Transport Solutions.

In the unveiling trailer for the latest Star Wars game titled “Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate’s Fortune”, it appears that Hondo Ohnaka enlisted or worked with the Rokana Raiders in pursuit of the Khepi Tomb’s riches. However, it is possible that Ohnaka will manipulate both the Raiders and his own Trailblazer crew to achieve his goals. Throughout history, Ohnaka has often exploited conflicts between factions, such as acquiring an Ugnaught pirate gang and an Imperial Sentinel-class shuttle during a skirmish between the Empire and Rebels, without facing any repercussions. It’s possible that he may initially appear as an ally to Vess, but could ultimately aim to seize the treasure for his own Ohnaka Transport Solutions business towards the end of the game expansion.

In this adaptation, we find that Hondo Ohnaka is brought to life by the accomplished voice artist Jim Cummings. Notably, he has lent his voice to beloved characters such as Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Taz the Tasmanian Devil, Disney’s Pete, and The Master from Fallout 1, among a plethora of other roles.
