Make way, Marvin the Melancholic Robot, a freshly awkward automaton has arrived! Meet Alexander Skarsgård’s autonomous “Sec Unit” protection officer, who prefers to be called the somewhat ominous Murderbot, as introduced in the much-anticipated debut trailer for Chris and Paul Weitz’s forthcoming Apple TV+ science fiction comedy series.

Drawing inspiration from Martha Wells’ popular science fiction series, Murderbot Diaries, this ten-episode show will delve into the adventures of an unlocked android who takes up a job safeguarding a team of scientists – called the PreservationAux survey group. They journey to an unexplored world in search of novel life forms, but their discovery is interrupted when a colossal new creature encounters them first, showing signs of displeasure towards the intruders…

Apple TV+ Releases The First Trailer For Murderbot And Its Upcoming Release Date

Murderbot expresses in the trailer that it was designed to safeguard and follow human commands, but humans can be quite foolish. If you’ve ever pondered how an android might act once given freedom, this upcoming sci-fi comedy seems to address that query with a delightful twist of relatability. It appears Murderbot’s true desire is simply to have some peace and quiet to indulge in his favorite soap operas, specifically “The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon” featuring John Cho from “Star Trek” and Clark Gregg from “The Avengers.” In fact, it boasts an impressive total viewing time of 7532 hours thus far.

In just a short while, it seems the game will end as Gurathin, portrayed by actor David Dastmalchian from the movie “Oppenheimer”, uncovers that the android isn’t entirely what it appears to be – it’s actually a supposed “killing machine.” With this revelation, one wonders if the crew can rely on the Sec Unit for their protection. Given the situation, where an intruder android seems to be assaulting the scientists’ base, it appears they have little other option, as it raises concerns about whether other robots might have turned against them.

The trailer effectively portrays the humor, mood, and witty self-talk characteristic of the book series through its first-person narrative style. It’s enjoyable to witness Alexander Skarsgård showcase his comedic talents, a skill he hasn’t fully demonstrated in past roles, except for his humorous appearance in FX’s What We Do in the Shadows.

In an interview with Empire, Alexander Skarsgård remarked ironically that Murderbot felt more familiar to him than many characters he’s portrayed before, as both have a certain social unease or struggle to find their place within groups. Interestingly, the trailer suggests that Murderbot, despite his disregard for humans, even shares an aversion to eye contact – a trait common among humans. Yet, one might wonder if Murderbot truly feels this way too.

Initially, Murderbot was appalled by its treatment by all its clients, enduring harsh conditions. But then an unexpected turn of events led it to a peculiar planet inhabited by a group of humans who operate outside the corporate system. Unlike previous clients, they don’t believe in enslavement and instead engage in conversation with Murderbot, offering it companionship rather than confining it to a tool shed. This bizarre situation leaves Murderbot feeling bewildered.

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the upcoming sci-fi series boasts an impressive cast: myself as Gurathin, Noma Dumezweni playing Mensah, Sabrina Wu portraying Pin-Lee, Akshay Khanna in the role of Ratthi, Tattiawna Jones as Arada, and Tamara Podemski bringing Bharadwaj to life.

On Friday, May 16, 2025, the much-anticipated series called Murderbot is set to launch on Apple TV+ streaming service, kicking things off with the first two episodes. After the initial two-episode premiere, fresh episodes will be available every Friday thereafter, culminating in the season finale on July 11.
