Set in the Deep South, the action-adventure game titled “South of Midnight” features characters with distinct accents, although one character stands out among fans. Trailers for “South of Midnight” have hinted at a massive talking catfish character, who acts as both mentor and transportation for the protagonist Hazel. Remarkably, this catfish speaks in a thick Cajun accent, reminiscent of another popular character from 2024 – Gambit, known for his Cajun-accented roles in movies like “Deadpool” and “Wolverine.” However, the actor behind the catfish‘s voice remains unknown.
Who Is Catfish In South Of Midnight?
In the novel “South of Midnight,” Hazel’s journey takes her across a mystical Deep South landscape where she meets an unusual character: a catfish named Catfish, who can apparently move on land and even hang from trees. Despite being a fish, he appears benevolent, acting as both a guide and mentor to Hazel. He shares stories of legendary creatures she will face and offers strategies for dealing with them. Moreover, when necessary, Catfish doubles as transportation for Hazel by carrying her across waterways.
In a recent Instagram post, the creators of South of Midnight, Compulsion Games, depicted Catfish as a skilled storyteller, leveraging his deep understanding of myths and wisdom to assist Hazel. His narration is delivered in a thick Cajun dialect that may be challenging to comprehend at times. Given Catfish‘s chatty personality, significant role in South of Midnight, and the distinctiveness of his accent, players can expect numerous memorable quotes and lines from this character to emerge as potential memes.
Catfish Could Be The Continuation Of 2024’s Gambit Memes
2024 saw the arrival of another Cajun-accented character from the X-Men universe, Gambit, this time played by Channing Tatum in both Deadpool and Wolverine. Previously, Taylor Kitsch had portrayed Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but his version lacked the distinctive Cajun accent that the character sports in the comics. To address this, Tatum fully adopted the accent and even elicited a comment from Deadpool in the movie, who joked about Gambit’s “dialogue coach” potentially being a Minion from Despicable Me.
Fans on social media and TikTok turned Gambit, the character played by Deadpool and Wolverine, into a popular joke, due to his dialogue in the movie being difficult for viewers to understand. They often shared screenshots from the film with captions like “Incomprehensible sounds” or “Total gibberish,” and even altered one line, “Woo, I’m about to make a name for myself, here,” into humorous versions such as “Wooimbouttamakeanameformyselfere” or other strange letter combinations.
In the upcoming game “South of Midnight,” released in April next year, Catfish seems poised to become the new go-to character for thick Cajun accent memes, given his distinctive voice. While it’s uncertain if any of his lines will reach the same level of meme fame as Gambit’s “Woo, I’m about to make a name for myself, here,” there’s a good chance that Catfish could generate plenty of memes in 2025. Fans might even create their own videos or edited screenshots swapping Catfish and Gambit. Building on the success of Cajun accent memes in 2024, Catfish could continue this trend by keeping the meme momentum started by Gambit.
