As a dedicated gamer and anime fan with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but be utterly thrilled by Megan Thee Stallion’s latest album, “Megan.” With each new release from this dynamic artist, I eagerly anticipate any potential nods to the world of anime and manga that has long captivated my imagination.

Megan Thee Stallion, a renowned rapper from America, proudly identifies herself as a “hot girl” and an ardent enthusiast of anime. Consistently, she has expressed her affection for anime through various means. This is evident in her music, the vibrant cosplays she dons, or simply in conversations during interviews.

As a longtime fan of Megan’s music, I was beyond excited for the release of her third studio album, Megan, which dropped on 28 June 2024. This album truly did not disappoint! One of my favorite tracks is “Otaku Hot Girl”, a catchy and vibey song that’s been making waves on TikTok among anime fans. The way the melody blends with the lyrics is just mesmerizing, and I find myself humming it throughout the day.

Megan’s Love For Anime Shines on Her New album

As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled to share that in May, Megan made an exciting announcement. She disclosed that for her new album, she managed to secure permission to incorporate an anime sample into one of the tracks, eliciting enthusiasm from us fans with her words, “This is unprecedented/Quite a challenge y’all are going to go wild!” The song in question turned out to be named “Otaku Hot Girl.”

For any “Jujutsu Kaisen” enthusiast, it’s common knowledge that Yuji has a fondness for women with ample derrieres. Similarly, Megan Thee Stallion’s fans are well-aware of her self-assuredness regarding her physique. This opening is an exquisite blend of weeb culture, familiarity with the source material, and a delightful pinch of humor. The catchy jingle from “Jujutsu Kaisen” season two was also included in the production. Nearly every lyric in this song contains an anime reference.

  • “Can’t touch me, like Gojo” in the chorus (Jujutsu Kaisen)
  • “White wig on, b***h, I’m finna go Gojo” (Jujutsu Kaisen)
  • “N***** bow down when I pop out like Sukuna” (Jujutsu Kaisen)
  • “Sexy jutsu, I feel like Naruto (Naruto)
  • “Fighting demons in my head like I’m Itadori (Jujutsu Kaisen)
  • “I’m not finna argue with a Sasuke avi” (Naruto)
  • “Incel mad, I’m a weeb and a baddie”
  • “‘Cause he wanna get caught in my domain expansion” (Jujutsu Kaisen)
  • “With a Sasuke sharingan” (Naruto)

This song was not easy to record, according to Megan on Instagram Live. She said:

“I included an anime-inspired track in my album, which was quite a challenge for me to finalize.”

Megan shared that she hadn’t sought permission before recording the song due to her uncertainty about its outcome. She merely wanted to gauge public response. Upon sharing it with the appropriate individuals, however, she encountered reluctance. Alterations were required in the lyrics, and a music video featuring cosplay was forbidden. Megan expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to release the song and complied with all necessary regulations.

I was eagerly awaiting the release of her album, scheduled for 28 June. The final touches were put in place on 25 June when suddenly, at the eleventh hour, I received a distressing request. I was asked to remove the characters’ names from one particular song. This was a difficult decision as both the music sample and the characters’ names played significant roles in tying the track together for me. Now, I found myself grappling with the dilemma of prioritizing music clearance or character name clearance – a choice that felt incredibly stressful to make.

After working tirelessly with her team to modify the song lyrics through numerous stages, the anime studio eventually gave their approval.

The song “BOA” by Megan isn’t alone in being influenced by Japan. Its title and Megan’s promotional style are reminiscent of Boa Hancock from “One Piece,” a famous anime. In the music video for this track, there are clear inspirations from anime genres like “Sword Art Online,” games such as “Tekken,” and even classic Japanese arcade games such as “Dance Dance Revolution.” As a result, “BOA” is particularly appealing to geek culture. Megan also worked with the Japanese rapper Yuki Chiba on the song “Mamushi,” which features both Japanese and English lyrics. Megan makes references to Japan within the song and even includes some lines sung in Japanese.

Megan Thee Stallion, known for her open affection for anime, connects deeply with anime enthusiasts through her song “Otaku Hot Girl.” This term might not resonate with those outside the anime community. She goes beyond just paying homage; she incorporates Japanese artists and aspects of their culture into her album, showcasing her deep appreciation for Japan’s global influence in the art world.
