Crafting a satisfactory ending for any story is no small feat, especially in the realm of Shonen manga where meeting every fan’s expectations can be exceptionally challenging. The truth is, an author cannot possibly please everyone, and it’s inevitable that devotees of particular characters may be left dissatisfied.

Speaking as a passionate fan, there are particular characters in a story that we fans eagerly anticipate the author to portray flawlessly, and these often encompass the principal figures. In the captivating world of Jujutsu Kaisen, the leading characters were none other than Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara. These characters had an incredible debut in their stories, yet not all received the ideal conclusion they truly deserved – especially Megumi Fushiguro.

However, ultimately, his fate took an unexpected turn when the author chose to end his character in a dramatic and shocking manner.

In the storyline known as the Culling Game, Ryomen Sukuna, a powerful entity, managed to take control of Megumi Fushiguro’s body after skillfully changing vessels. This transformation made him stronger than he had been when inhabiting Yuji’s body. This significant event marked the beginning of the climactic part of ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’, but unfortunately for Megumi, it also signified a halt in his personal growth and development.

Readers found the “Culling Game” arc in the series “Jujutsu Kaisen” heartbreaking for Megumi. In this storyline, Megumi embarked on a mission to save his sister, but instead, he was manipulated by Sukuna. As Sukuna gained control over his body, Megumi’s ability to resist was severely limited. Tragically, when he ended up killing his own sister, Megumi’s desire to live vanished. The act of slaying yet another cherished person, coupled with the realization that there was nothing left for him to live for, further deteriorated Megumi’s character. His ambitions and aspirations no longer held any significance for him, and he ultimately surrendered.

As the fight in Shinjuku Showdown persisted, Megumi Fushiguro drifted further into unconsciousness, giving Sukuna more dominion over his body. He even turned down an offer for help from Yuji, and had he accepted it, the battle against Sukuna would’ve likely been won then and there. Regrettably, he opted not to, forcing Yuji to strive harder in a bid to save him. The disheartening aspect was that Megumi, once a vibrant character with his own goals, became essentially a plot device who needed rescuing from the adversary by the end of the series.

Megumi Was Saved By Yuji Itadori

To put it simply, Megumi’s initial plot idea wasn’t flawed at all; incorporating Sukuna’s takeover could have been beneficial for Megumi’s development. However, to make this narrative element effective, Megumi needed to establish himself as an individual after defeating Ryomen Sukuna, pursuing his own dreams and ambitions. Unfortunately, the story concluded too soon, leaving Megumi without a chance to develop independently, which is the main issue. If the story had progressed further, allowing Megumi time to grow, achieve his goals, and reach his full potential, it would have made for a satisfying conclusion.

Rather than having Megumi play a minor role in Yuji’s fight against Sukuna, fans were left anticipating as Yuji overcame Sukuna instead. In the aftermath of this battle, Megumi was rescued and subsequently appeared sporadically in subsequent chapters. During these appearances, he attended Tsumiki’s funeral and little else was revealed about him. It is regrettable that Megumi didn’t receive more development, as his character could have benefited greatly from additional focus. If JJK were to produce a one-shot or spin-off in the future, it would be ideal for Megumi to receive further character exploration.
