In just two short months following Ambessa’s debut, Riot Games are readying another character hailing from Noxus for the upcoming season, a figure that fans of Arcane will surely recognize. Mel Medarda, a council member from Piltover and a recently-empowered mage, is set to join the fray on Summoner’s Rift as League of Legends‘ 170th champion.
Mel the Champion: What We Know
In the absence of a thorough introduction or “spotlight,” it can be challenging to decipher essential details about a new champion on the battlefield, such as their abilities, playstyle, and lane placement. For now, fans have limited information, but Riot has provided some insights. Additionally, there’s an exciting chance to draw inspiration from Mel’s depiction in Arcane to help fill in the gaps.
In the TV series Arcane, Mel’s character development provides insight into her future portrayal. Throughout the show, it is revealed that Mel possesses a unique magical ability due to her mother, Ambessa, having an affair with a male mage. This hidden talent unfolds and becomes clearer over the course of the two seasons in Arcane.
In the second season, it’s evident that Mel employs her magical abilities during a confrontation with Ambessa and the Noxian hired soldiers. Here, she creates protective barriers and shields which serve to safeguard Caitlyn as she engages in her own combat.
In the storyline, when the Black Rose captures Mel, LeBlanc identifies her as an empath. This means she has a profound link to the Arcane, which manifests as a form of light. Unlike other forms of light magic that serve defensively as shields, Mel uses this power to free herself from the Black Rose’s control. Recently, in a video by Riot Games and Fortiche animators, we see Mel reappearing on a Noxus shore. Once there, she battles the Black Rose again, with her light magic dissolving the restraints that once bound her.
A Sneak Peek at One of Mel’s Abilities
Lately, Riot Games UK office shared a preview of an upcoming ability for the character Mel in their game, titled Rebuttal. This ability functions as a defensive counterspell, enabling Mel to block and redirect incoming attacks like projectiles. By creating a light prism around herself, Mel is able to strategically deflect certain powerful projectiles from League of Legends, provided she times her action correctly. A short video demonstrated Mel successfully diverting Ezreal’s ultimate Trueshot Barrage, Veigar’s Primordial Burst, and Lux’s Light Binding Q snare.

In the style of recent champions introduced in League of Legends, Rebuttal appears to be a significant game-altering addition. This new feature redirects any targeted skill back to its original user, and it even causes shorter range projectiles to curve back towards their originator, much like Lux’s Light Binding. Players are already eagerly anticipating how Rebuttal might interact with various abilities belonging to Mel, as well as potential cooldown times for such a potent ability, which doesn’t appear to be an ultimate skill.
In terms of video game conventions, it’s not surprising to encounter a character with redirect abilities, as games like Overwatch and Super Smash Bros. have characters known for this feature. However, the introduction of such an ability in League of Legends, specifically in the case of Mel’s new Rebuttal skill, seems novel to its fans. Given Mel’s background from Arcane, it appears that the upcoming League of Legends champion will likely play a supportive mage role, potentially filling either the support or midlane positions. Until an official champion spotlight video is released, fans can only guess as we get closer to the new season in League.
