Mercy Soars Again: Overwatch 2 Hotfix Buffs Classic Mode’s Moth Meta

Summary

  • A new Overwatch 2 hotfix boosted Mercy’s abilities in Overwatch: Classic, improving her Guardian Angel and Resurrect.
  • The small update aims to align Mercy’s abilities in the Classic mode with her balance from 2017, rather than introducing new power.
  • The hotfix showcases Overwatch 2’s Rapid Balance Update tech, allowing for quick bug and balance adjustments in-between major updates.

In the game Overwatch, the latest update has boosted the power of Mercy in the classic version. Known for her role in the Butterfly Combo or Moth Meta, she can now have an even greater impact on games during this special Overwatch event.

In the previous year, players of Overwatch 2 were taken aback when a special game mode called Overwatch: Classic was introduced. This limited-time feature took us back to the early days of Overwatch 1. On February 4, Overwatch: Classic reappeared, transporting us to a timeframe around September 2017 that included characters like Ana and Sombra, Symmetra’s Photon Barrier, and DPS Doomfist in Overwatch. This particular period stands out because almost every team had a Mercy, as her revamped single-target Resurrect, which was instantaneous, along with her flying Valkyrie ultimate, made her incredibly powerful. Due to this dominance of Mercy, this era became known as the “Moth Meta.

Currently, “Overwatch 2” has rolled out a minor adjustment aimed at boosting the effectiveness of the “Moth” strategy in Moth Meta. This update on February 6 brings about enhancements to Mercy’s Guardian Angel, making it faster and capable of reaching further distances when activated during her Valkyrie ultimate in Overwatch: Classic. Moreover, Resurrect now has an immediate cast time, enabling Mercy to quickly assist her teammates. However, it’s important to note that the “Superjump” maneuver, a carryover from the original “Overwatch”, remains unavailable as a bug in this version.

Some players might be curious about why Overwatch 2 is enhancing Mercy in Overwatch: Classic, given that the Moth Meta was due to how easily the support hero ruled during that period. However, these enhancements are actually bug fixes meant to restore her balance to what it was in 2017, not an increase in her power.

This quick fix is a demonstration of the new Rapid Balance Adjustment technology in action for Overwatch 2. With this innovation, Overwatch 2 has been able to release multiple smaller bug and balance updates, sometimes as many as two or three, during the timeframe between major season and mid-season updates. Players can anticipate at least one more adjustment before the conclusion of Overwatch: Classic targeting Doomfist.

In “Overwatch 2”, starting immediately up until February 18 (when Season 15 is scheduled), you’ll be able to access the classic version of Overwatch. Prior to that, enthusiasts can anticipate an “Overwatch 2” Spotlight event on February 12, offering a sneak peek at upcoming heroes, maps, and significant PvP changes slated for later in 2025. As if that wasn’t enticing enough, viewers can grab the Lucio Cyber DJ and Flirty Flare Baptiste Legendary skins as free Twitch drops just by tuning in to the stream.
